Banking app tripwire

Off the back off the new monzo security tools, yesterday canarytools released a new (free) canary that creates a browser app (shortcut with no address bar when opened) that has the logo of popular apps and when someone clicks on it they get a connecting screen and you get an alert.

It’s great if someone is snooping on your phone or to put on the phones of people who could be taken advantage of, there’s options for Monzo, starling, PayPal and more. Go to canarytokens.org and search for fake app. Setting it up from the phone you want to protect is easiest so it can prompt you for location permissions for location to be included in the alert (optional).

You could set it up on a partner’s knowing that if you get an alert and can’t get hold of them that they’ve probably been mugged.

They also have other simple canaries which are essentially digital tripwires, that trigger if someone opens a file on your computer or complex ones for IT departments, worth having a look.

Be aware if the alert goes to an email that’s signed in on that device it may tip them off, but it’s not obvious from the email notification.
