I think it depends which part of finance you work in. I work in M&A, and it’s 90% men. But then the compliance floor is mostly women… (and before anyone jumps to conclusions, I’m definitely not condoning this!)
Edited for clarity.
But to either point……
Why…?
I’d probably make the case polling for gender is the more relevant topic in this context.
Because generally speaking (generally) very few reasons exist for one to know about someone’s sex before their gender, and they usually relate to healthcare reasons.
Why not?
It’s an optional poll. You’re here, so something must have interest you.
Before I joined this forum, I enjoyed reading it, but it seemed quite male dominated. I started wondering whether that’s because there’s generally less interest from women in fintech in general, or just Monzo. Or whether it’s because women are just not posting as much. There are some strong characters on this forum, so a poll is a nice anonymous way of getting an idea of the forum’s demographic.
I always find the census fascinating for instance.
If I’ve offended anyone, then apologies. Hopefully you can just ignore this thread, or as someone suggested, mute it.
Then you should be polling for gender, not sex.
That’s actually a really great post and to be honest had that been in the original or repost it might have helped guide people. Thanks for clarifying and I hope that this doesn’t put you off engaging because it absolutely shouldn’t!
I too would be interested in whether imbalance that the tech sector faces translates across into banking too. It certainly does from a tech side of things from research I can find.
As to whether sex or gender, any poll of this nature is always going to be quite emotionally driven. And potentially inadvertently exclusional if you are polling based on sex v gender.
Good luck with the poll.
Don’t take me the wrong way - I don’t have an issue with the poll - I just mean I find the choice to focus on sex Vs gender interesting.
Not “why are you doing the poll” so much, but “why are you seeking data on sex [and not gender]•”. Etc
It’s a wonder any woman posts on this forum with all the mansplaining going on here
Examples please.
Nearly 5 men to 1 women on this forum if the poll is anything to go by. Wonder why that is
As someone who is probably part of the reason we should be inclusive when it comes to these topics, here’s my 2 pence:
Why? Asking what bits people was born with is a bit invasive don’t you think? Also, fwiw: a lot of women (not all of course) that i’ve talked to dislike the use of male/female in non-medical contexts, it can be seen as demeaning.
I can’t see the original post, and you’ve cropped that screenshot down, but if, for the benefit of the doubt, there was just that title and a poll, yes, there should have been a friendly reminder to be inclusive and left it at that, no removal.
That is a noble cause - and i definitely aren’t opposed to the idea of the poll in general, we do need to see more women’s voices in (fin)tech, even just on the online platforms like these.
However, and don’t take this the wrong way, I don’t want to assume that this post was made in bad faith, however, the use of “sex, not gender”, seemingly complaining about inclusivity are common dogwhistles (i.e. phrases and terms that are seen as trivial to those unaware, but specific wording points out a undertone to those who are aware) i’ve seen from those who are trying to exclude gender diverse people.
I hope that this can be a constructive experience, and that people are not questioning the idea of polling for a gender bias, but trying to help you by questioning your method
