Apple Wallet to integrate with Open Banking APIs

Any bets on how many times they want to say “AI” this year?

I’m almost expecting them to use Paul Simon for a theme tune.

Edit to add something topical.
I think Apple have missed a trick, though, with the link process be started from a card in the apple wallet, since it effectively blocks you from adding most savings accounts, which means that it can never be a full money management solution.

Came across this article yesterday - it appears that the recently released iOS 17.1 Beta now allows Apple Wallet to display UK current account balances thanks to the Open Banking API. The image used is Monzo and they are listed, so I presume it works already for those with the Beta - anyone tried this yet?

Hi @jsnbts. This is already being discussed over at

Do mods have the ability to merge topics?

Apologies - I thought I had checked but must have missed it somehow!

Not sure if this is because i’ve linked Natwest with wallet in 17.1(?), but noticed that you can now run shortcuts on Transaction, and filter by catergory + merchants! Can’t think of any use cases atm, but pretty cool to see this level of integration

That’s existed for quite a while. But this new feature grants it a lot more utility. I expect we’ll see some nifty hacks out of this, even more so if banks would integrate with shortcuts to the same degree Monzo does with IFTTT.

Interesting, tbh haven’t used shortcuts for a while so not surprising i’d missed it. Did it have the categories + merchant filters too?

Yup!

You buy a Greggs and it starts blaring like a siren for 15 minutes straight to try and discourage you from getting fat on sausage rolls?

You probably could have it do that yes. :joy:

It’s not an automation I’ve ever played with really.

Here’s a very quick one I’ve cobbled together that will play Stop! In the Name of Lpve if I buy something in co-op

Wait, Child & Co working? Or does it allow you to do stuff even with cards not supported for the banking thing?

This isn’t tied to the open banking feature. It’s something that’s existed in shortcuts for a few years now. So it works will cards you have added.

Ah! But would this open banking thing mean that it now also works on non-Apple Pay transactions for supported banks?

Possibly! Someone with 17.1 and a linked account would need to check.

But it’s worth noting that this particular automation has a trigger condition of buying something with Apple Pay. The open banking stuff just increases the amount of merchant data you have to pick from to fine tune which purchases it would trigger on.

This is pretty exciting stuff and intrigued at Apple’s game plan here. Looking forward to trying it out. It would be handy to have the bank balance show on the double tab screen as well as when opening the Wallet app (which I don’t often do).

I wonder if this could maybe lead to them offering a service within Apple Pay that was similar to Curve’s ‘change your mind’ feature that they had - where you could pay for something on one card that was setup in Curve, but then change your mind after you’d already paid for it and instead get it covered by a different card.

One thought, after we had a couple of folks wanting monzo to have a wholly separate pin/password for accessing the app not just payments because of security concerns wouldn’t this make it really really easy for someone who stole your phone to go on a spending spree knowing your balance of all your accounts?

I mean it’s not a huge huge concern but something that will happen I fear. Also is there any faceid check to view this?
Just imagine your friends pulling uo your wallet app to take a gander at your balance for a troll (more a youth thing though)

I keep hoping Apple and Google will do something about the whole can change account password with only your device pin issue as well.

If the data is only stored on device, does it rule this out from evolving into something which people will want to use for analytics and budgeting (even if it gains such features in the future)?

When I get a new device I don’t mind adding cards to wallet again, and I probably wouldn’t mind reconnecting to banks for balance and transaction data, but I wouldn’t want to re-setup things like analytics and budgeting, and re-apply transaction metadata to old transactions (notes, categorisation, etc).
