Apple Wallet to integrate with Open Banking APIs

No need for apologies - you were spot on.

It’s me who has derailed it. So - back to Apple Wallet!

This worked super well for HSBC. Only slight gripe (which is not Apple’s fault) is that HSBC only publish the base currency for the global money account which, to me anyway, is dumb.

So, you can’t see other currency amounts but other than that works well and was super easy to setup.

Not sure what the point of it is, must be the enabler for other things :eyes:

I remember calling Orange up at the time asking them to change my 500 texts to unlimited.

What a life.

Sim bundles were a strange bunch.

Top up £10 and get 300 sms for the month.

Don’t even send 1 now.

But then back even earlier, Orange out here pack 5 free texts a day for £5 a month top up I think it was :joy:

The real way to talk.

Honestly super simple (as is connecting anything to HSBC).

Tapped to add the account, it took me right through to HSBC in app, selected the accounts and authed with FaceID first time.

The same with Lumio and Emma. Not to derail all that much, but HSBC are really gunning for it recently.

It doesn’t work yet, just tried.

I’d have thought they’d be in the game already with this.

Does it only work with current accounts and not credit cards?

Has anybody here tried Child & Co or are you just going by what was said on the other forum?

Really odd, considering it’s just a specific sort code and some branding.

This is literally just the first beta of 17.1 that was released less than 24 hours ago and there’s definitely bugs with the existing banks already setup anyway.
There’s probably a month or so to go before it’s released to the public so plenty of time for the banks to spot the email from Apple asking them if they’d be interested in joining.

Oh God, that looks awful. I have no desire to join Discord and I’m getting pissed off with the number of companies that I use switching to it from traditional fora or mailing lists. Do you actually have to talk to people and not just read/write?

I mean talk, as in use a microphone.

It does in Emma (and is grouped with credit cards), so it is possible.

In the Open Banking APIs, each account that is returned by the bank / finance institution has a numeric code which indicates the account type, current account, savings account, credit card, cash ISA, etc.

It’s once you get to this level, that it matters that Flex is, in fact, not a credit card.

The code returned by Monzo for the Flex account type is not the same as the code that would be returned for a credit card.

On the receiving end (Emma, Apple, etc.) they get the type code, and a bunch of data fields, showing things like balance, credit limit, etc.

Emma, has been programmed to recognise an account of this type, so gives meaningful data and groups it with the other credit cards, because it basically is one (to all intents and purposes).

Apple, and many others, don’t know what type it is, so treat it as a generic account, just showing your balance, and not understanding how to deal with the concept of a credit limit on it.

Monzo can’t fix this, they’re doing everything right.
Apple would need to add handling procedures for the new account type, and treat it like a credit card instead. You could report it to them as beta feedback, there’s no better time to get the code updated than before it’s been released, after all.

Good to know it works on the other platform. The one I don’t use… :person_facepalming:

But it’s a great feature and one that shows off how Open Banking can integrate into key apps that people use & rely on.

I’m really hoping that someone in Google Towers is either running around panicking, screaming “why didn’t we think of that”, or, better, finishing up the code for their version, ready for a release at Made by Google next month.

They’re all hungover after yesterday’s 25th birthday party :clinking_glasses: :beers: :man_dancing: :mirror_ball: :face_vomiting:

Hopefully they’ve recovered for next weeks event :crossed_fingers:

I’m almost expecting them to use Paul Simon for a theme tune.

Edit to add something topical.
I think Apple have missed a trick, though, with the link process be started from a card in the apple wallet, since it effectively blocks you from adding most savings accounts, which means that it can never be a full money management solution.

Came across this article yesterday - it appears that the recently released iOS 17.1 Beta now allows Apple Wallet to display UK current account balances thanks to the Open Banking API. The image used is Monzo and they are listed, so I presume it works already for those with the Beta - anyone tried this yet?

Hi @jsnbts. This is already being discussed over at
