Hamburger icon my option too. Hate how a bar along the bottom takes up a lot of my screen and forces you to scroll more even for recent transactions that would otherwise be visible at the bottom of the screen
Considering that the option is going in a few months with the move to current accounts then moving it back probably isn’t a priority.
Topping up by card will still be an option after the current accounts launch.
But @HoldenCarver once the current accounts launch & users are having their salaries paid into their account, you should need to use this feature a lot less frequently. So you’ll probably want it somewhere out of (as opposed to in) the way & you will of course remember where it is, after a few goes.
I’m not planning to use my Monzo account as my main account, and so would be very disappointed if I could no longer top up using a card.
The bottom navigation is better UI, even if it feels less material design like, as it avoids hiding options. It’s not that this app is particularly perfect when it comes to material design. I wish the app were more material design though.
However, the bottom bar does currently have problems:
- It has too much height and shadow, which makes it look odd to me.
- I wish that it would hide when it scrolled.
- It would also be nice if the settings could be added to the card page, and the help to a new bottom nav tab - and then the navigation drawer removed completely
You will still be able to top your current account up by card.
You’re in the #android
channel in the developer’s Slack so you’ve probably seen this but anyway, here’s why the team don’t think that’s a good idea -
Hmmm. It is a fairly common action though? If you think about the address bar in Chrome on mobile, it hides as you scroll down and reappears going up.
It is probably just a lazy cop out not bothering to make the bar at the bottom hide under the excuse some people may not realise. Doh. Do we really have to write an app just for the Homer Simpsons of this world?
I was going to say the exact same thing. I think that making the navigation bar slightly smaller would help make it feel more android-like. Examples I have found where this is the case are Instagram, YouTube, Google maps and Keep.
If Monzo changed the size of the navigation bar to something closer to the size of the bar in these apps, then it would be in great company.
I have no strong feelings one way or the other on the design, as it’s maintained functionality in either layout.
I finally witnessed a starling account app, my word it’s pretty and sleek!
Bottom but would look nicer in dark blue.
Apart from that, I never worry about app development. Android usually catches up and in a lot of cases ends up better.
Maybe I’ll feel different if it affects current account roll out
I agree with the comments that the bottom bar takes up too much space, especially with the large header. Swipe from the left please.
once the current accounts launch
Makes more sense then, shame they couldn’t have held it back for that point. This is one feature where I would’ve been quite happy with an iOs->Android lag
I wanted to raise another issue concerning the Android top-up interface. I feel if you press the plus button in the lower right corner for top-up and then the plus button for increasing the top-up amount, then these two buttons should be aligned to be in the same place on the screen so that you don’t have to move your thumb. Essentially top up should work like some microwaves where repeated presses of the same button increase the cooking time.
I think the reason YouTube, Instagram and Google Photos feel a lot less “iOSy” is because they all have white/light background and bar is aligned with that (in terms of colours). Monzo is dark blue, hence the bar is standing out.
And I can say that even after a couple of months of using it - I still didn’t get use to it and it still feels a bit weird any time I open the app
I’m really not a fan of the change in the latest Android app that has removed the settings option from the swipe-right menu. It’s not very obvious how to find the settings from the account tab.
