Amex (American Express) Discussion

I was thinking that but then thought maybe I was being paranoid.

I didn’t call them back but to be fair, I know it was them as they asked if an Apple Pay issue I’m having had been resolved during the call which allayed that fear.

I was at work and didn’t pay as much attention as perhaps should but they wanted payslips and bank statements, which has gotten my back up a little. Could understand one or the other but both seems a little overkill and I’m not entirely comfortable with.

They have indeed blocked the card.

I would have closed my account there and then. But then mine isn’t a Gold card, just Platinum

Honestly it crossed my mind to do so but they said I’d get something in the mail to look over so I’m just waiting for that to land.

Also - since they’ve frozen the card it doesn’t appear to let me make a payment onto the balance, so I may as well wait a couple of days!

Hence why mine are stored in a password management app too. Never need a card with you then

Within a week after the final confirmation.

My card took around 2 weeks to arrive. It felt like a lifetime.

2 or 3 days from confirmation to receiving the card for me.

3 days last amex card I applied for.

Wasn’t long for mine - applied on a Friday, card was delivered the following Monday. Was quite impressed with turnaround on cards from them; my supplementary cardholder’s card came in under 24 hours!

I just learned that Amex won’t adjust a direct debit amount if you get a refund to the card after the statement is produced. Thanks to Monzo I could cancel my direct debit and pay the card manually, but that’s slightly annoying…

Once the statement is produced it probably sets off the direct debit process and can’t be stopped. Usually isn’t an issue.

This month I paid off my Amex slightly earlier than my direct debit. Amex have today credited my account of the direct debit amount so I’m way past my credit limit but it’ll balance out itself. Nothing has come from my bank either.

It’s common practice for this to happen to be fair. IMO anyway.

Oh interesting, you’re probably right. I think my Nationwide CC does it differently, but they might be an outlier.

I would be careful about this and contact American Express to clarify exactly how much money they’re expecting from you.

Technically that refund doesn’t reduce the statement that you’ve received, it will apply to your next statement so it may not reduce any minimum payment or balance due from you to avoid interest and charges.

Different card providers apply different logic to this though, so I would double check with Amex that you don’t need to pay and then request a credit balance refund from them.

I spoke to them as I paid my entire outstanding balance but there was still a ā€˜remaining statement balance’ showing due to the refund. They said not to worry about it but I think the system could probably be better.

If you’ve paid your remaining full balance though, a refund will be a credit to your account? So your balance should show a negative (ie. Amex owe you).

Several times recently I’ve either had a refund and they have notified me that the DD will be adjusted (on my charge card), or paid off my credit card and they have not taken the DD at all.

The refund was weeks ago so I just paid the total current balance to be sure there was nothing outstanding.

This normally is before the final statement is produced.
