Abandon merchant logos!

I would not say “love”, but I would be very disheartened if they were to go, looking at a bland white feed of names. If I wanted a plain transaction page there’s a legacy bank I could have stayed with

I feel that logos make it a little clearer at a glance where my money has gone.

We now have one thread despairing that Monzo are making less use of their wordmark, pretty much a logo, and this thread suggesting binning off logos for all other companies

Glory days

I wish the Backend was just more automatic to help stop the workloads etc. As it seems quite archaic in this day and age to have an non automated process for something as simple as this

The merchant data that comes through looks about as messy and disorganised as one could expect from thousands of independent and often indifferent merchants

I cannot imagine a sensible way to automate it (in its entirety). There is no one set of rules that can be relied on to be accurate for all businesses in all areas.

It would be ideal if there was a way to make this “opensource” or to that effect.

Yeah, personally I really can’t see any way for such a mechanism to be financially viable for a company like Monzo to run without either crowd sourcing this a.la google local guides or splitting it off open sourcing it a.la open street map. The latter may have issues as Monzo may not be able to expose some of the info Mastercard gives them?

Monzo having this feature is genuinely something that is impressive, but the long term viability of maintaining such a list with the current model is questionable IMHO.

I wonder if whether there is scope to gameify it

Maybe a false hope, but can you see the number of necessary updates, at least within the UK, slow down as time goes on, so long as things like Roadchef can be bolted down?

Surely the number of interested Monzonauts out there is moving and growing faster than the number of merchants?

Or maybe not right now…

I just find the whole experience of Monzo clean. I feel the logo’s obviously being something other banks (Nationwide, Lloyds etc) don’t do just makes the whole experience better.

Personally I like them. I’m always suggesting logos if they don’t have them. Like the way it looks!

Keep them. It’s easier to quickly breakdown which companies you spend too much at. But for when I want to check categories there should be a visible switch button to switch between the two. Or just display both

The easiest way to please everyone is to add a toggle in settings, a quick and easy solution :100::ok_hand:

Maybe @kieranmch could jot it down as a suggestion? :yum:

That would work incredibly well, however I suspect their current merchant data infrastructure proves too much of a problem, it would probably take too much work for such a small aspect of their app.

I’m a lyrics curator for MusixMatch and user-submitted lyrics are verified by us. It shows a list of reports by users in-app and we can easily and quickly act upon them.

Something like this for members of the :monzo: coral crew would be awesome. They are already trusted members of the community and I’m sure they would happily contribute to Merchant corrections.

I know this is not a priority for Monzo but more and more people seem to be talking about it. Merchant enrichment is great, but there’s no point in it if it’s not correct, no matter how quick it is to fix.

I think if anything I think Merchant Enrichment etc could be a thing all on its own as more banks get on board, people will want more enrichment. At the moment, I totally agree that their current infrastructure is a little convoluted(couldn’t think of a better word). I think gamifying it could be relatively straight forward.
majority of the data can be gleaned from various APIs(Mastercard etc), I think what annoys people mostly is the Merchant logos mismatch. So really there are only 3 questions you’re asking
1)Is it located correctly
2) Is it named correctly
3) Is the Logo correct
So you could score each one of of three. I’m very sure you could probably add to the stickers on here so you get streaks for how many you do correct in row (Borrow Snapchats idea and work on it).
I suppose what is a better question is it better to have a Standard logo and Personalised logos i.e Logos that you change on your account yourself.
If anyone actually goes ahead and develops something like listed up above just give me credit and nothing else :rofl::sunglasses:
Very good song btw in your example :ok_hand:

  1. Is the address correct

(sometimes the map location is incorrect, but the address is correct and vice versa)

Definitely a keep for me - it’s one of the things that makes Monzo less Bank-y and more Life focused.

Yeah, I like the merchant logos. An option to turn them off may be nice if you want a change or don’t want them though.

In general, we won’t introduce toggles to our app unless there is a very compelling reason. In this case I don’t believe there is.

We do have work to do on improving merchant data and making it scale properly. That being said, I don’t think it’s so bad that anyone should have to turn it off. We review every single piece of feedback we receive, so please keep submitting it to improve it for everyone
