A few words about how things are going

But surely they should lose their CC status if they repeatedly cause problems?

Or alternatively could there be a way for the community to vote for someone’s CC status to be removed?

Coral Crew are held accountable to the same code of conduct as everybody else. Inappropriate posts by us are treated the same way as anybody else’s. Flag and staff will review

I must say i think the ‘Coral Crew’ has had more of a negative effect on the forum than a benefit. It seems to make some of them seem more entitled and act like their opinions are the official view of monzo and get very defensive.

Some however are very pleasant and havent let the power corrupt them.

I’m just not sure I really see the need for them

I don’t see that at all, I see more people find second meanings that aren’t there or continue to challenge until reactions are triggered.

I’ve thought a lot about how, and indeed whether, to contribute to this discussion. It’s come up lots of times now.

I worry that people are confusing two things: coral crew status and the conduct of individuals. Some people have had bad experiences with someone with a 4 next to their photo - and then immediately take issue with all 4s. This seems clearly wrong to me.

You see the same thing reported about investors with the accusation made they are talking up Monzo for financial benefit. Again, this seems to me to be taking isolated incidents and assuming they’re representative of a whole group. They’re not.

Everyone is human. Everyone has faults. Coral Crew (and Monzo) included. But what we can’t have is public trial by forum. I think it’s for this reason that @cookywook is reticent about publishing the coral crew code of conduct. In such a febrile atmosphere people will start policing them. And then things will spiral.

(Edit: I hadn’t meant to publish this post just then - hit the wrong button. I’d planned on reviewing and reflecting on it so apologies if it’s a bit blunt in places).

Yeah tbh maybe Monzo should just moderate the forums themselves only. Not like they can’t afford to.

I actually have to agree with Melton here, whilst there are some great members of the ‘Coral Crew’ there are one or two people who… have gotten a wee bit carried away with it.

Just a reminder - we are not moderators.

2 posts were merged into an existing topic: Removed Posts - 10/7/18

And yet the CC people consistently behave like they are. Moving around posts etc is - by definition - moderation.

And if they’re not, what purpose do they serve?

Do I? I’m just a contributor here. Please see my above post.

Edit: Oh - you edited your post after I responded. Moving posts and splitting is house keeping. Forum moderation is enforcement of the rules.

If you can remove posts from threads then you most definitely are a moderator.

Seems to meet the definition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum#Moderators

Gee, I’m really feeling the love.

I joined as CC because I thought I could do more to help out and get involved, but now it seems like people are conflating us with Monzo staff. We’re users too and I think people overestimate the amount of mod powers we have.

Every thread is getting derailed- I don’t really like having to constantly flag posts to staff for moderation because tensions are running high or someone makes a pointed/ snarky remark, but lately it’s been happening so often, with the same topic spilling off into multiple threads.

Sometimes I’m afraid to comment on Monzo threads- if I’m supportive, I’m clearly a kool-aid drinker and blind fan of Monzo. It just is easier for me to avoid topics and not engage, as it creates additional stress on the staff.

For fear of giving arguers the satisfaction of argument, which a wise person told me about recently, I’ll leave this as my last input: I’m not allowed to remove posts.

I have had the same issues and I used to be a regular poster here; it culminated in me being rudely and nastily accused of something that was completely untrue. I now mostly frequent as a lurker as I don’t feel overly confident posting here.

I’ve noticed reams of posts disappear simply as members of the Coral Crew don’t want any more discussion on a certain topic. “Oh no, not that again!” I’ve reported it before and received the empty message of “We agree and are looking into it.” only for the exact issues to happen again.

Ultimately, it’s the same old members of the Coral Crew that are being complained about time and time again.

I’ve had chats with other users who have stopped using the forum or been deeply unhappy because of some of the crew’s actions. Why not step back and actually look at the situation and the damage that has been done by one or two of the rogue members of the crew?

Locking this thread for a bit to calm down. Which is a real disappointment.

In the meantime, I’ll think long and hard about what we can do to improve transparency around the Coral Crew Code of Conduct. We certainly don’t want it to be a way for the Coral Crew to come under fire, but I agree that it shouldn’t be shrouded in mystery earlier. Watch this space :eyes:
