or should I say if you were an internet user in the early 2000’s

Emoticons are actually different from emoji. Not massively different, but enough for the different naming.
Emoji are completely standard text characters - part of Unicode, and are rendered differently on each OS.
Emoticons are images rather than text, usually not vector, and generally always render the same on every OS.
