I think it depends on how often you have to reactivate it.
Most times I can activate via SMS but when I tried to activate it on my MacBook it require the phone call.
Interestingly I think this comes down to need.
I know where all my money is going every month and how much I have left. Now I have a very simple budget and realise that not everyone does but in this instance budgeting tools wouldn’t swing it for me
I haven’t used Starling to compare it, but I think the Monzo budgeting is poor. It gives a very very top level summary but that’s it. It doesn’t give you the chance to compare or any trends it.
Your budget for the month gets broken very easily but a simple shared tab/transfer and there’s very little flexibility in it.
Monzo having the Google Sheets export is a huge plus for me. That was the main reason I upgraded and it’s the only reason I keep it really. I have very good detail of my finances now but that’s only because I’ve put the effort in to create it.
For budgeting in Starling, I make extensive use of their Goals feature.
For monthly bills, I actually budget by having them all leave my account the day after pay day, so anything still in my account on 1st is available to do with as I please.
I have a number of annual bills - things like Amazon Prime, Disney+, Google Drive, home insurance, various membership fees, etc. I put 1/12 into a Goal each month then have the funds available to pay each annual bill when it comes in. I also put aside each month for things like Christmas, holidays, self-assessment tax return, etc.
Personally, bills from pots and second accounts are of no use to me, though I can see why other people would find them helpful.
That sounds similar to pots then. I use them like you do per month for things like car insurance/service, ground rent etc.
But as I haven’t been organised enough to get all my direct debits on the same day, I like having them in a bill pot out the way. It’s also easier for me to build up a little bit of an excess like that.
It doesn’t seem like it will be long until Starling have pay-from-goals and at that point, I think more people will give it a try.
I have really enjoyed going through the thread this morning with everyone’s answers and I’m actually really happy to see I did not divide the community and cause all hell to break loose!
It’s clear that every bank has its own benefits and its difficult to recommend, my friends chose starling over Monzo for the post office ability
Still got account with Monzo but starling money was benign taken out of my starling account and it wasn’t me as I live in wales and the money was taken out at a atm and this happened three times in one day and when I seen that money was taken I got in touch with starling and the reply I had back omg
