Folks, I know everyone has good intentions and means well but the reality is that hiring is an incredibly complex thing that differs hugely from role to role, and thereās really so many reasons why someone might not get an offer, so letās all calm down a little bit.
I wonāt sit here and say we always get it right, but it aināt easy to make those calls and without having insight into any individual application itās not appropriate to speculate.
If Marcus really wants to be here then I am sure that with the right position, the right application, the right interview at the right time then all the stars will align. As Iāve said on previous occasions, weāve plenty of people here in the company who applied in the past and didnāt get offers at that time. Maybe that was the wrong decision or maybe it was the right decision for that time and for how things should play out, but being the person who has to make that decision, or part of the group that has to have that discussion is never easy no matter what the role is - and I would know, having assisted with hiring and conducted interviews myself on several occasions.
Iām very fond of all of you within our community and in an ideal world, anyone who participates here and wants to join us would get the opportunity to do so. But the reality is that itās much more complex, and a huge amount of thought and consideration does go into every decision we have to make when hiring, whether offers are made or not.
Marcus knows that he is a hugely valued member of our community, but I am sure that he would prefer that his every thoughtful contribution not be followed with posts about how we should hire him - those are conversations to be had between any given recruiter or member of the hiring team and himself in private, not in a public debate that lacks context
I second this completely and we need to understand this on the community
I have lots of people wanting me back at Monzo doing Review Merchant but itās just not the right time (for me mostly with mental health) or right application and my stars havenāt aligned.
How do you decide if someone is suitable for the āMonzo ethosā though. Did you review all of their applications?
Not saying youāre wrong but good to have some background behind such a big statement.
If they all applied for Customer Support then before the assessment day (ie. application, cv, cover letter and customer query scenarios) Monzo are assessing their written English/tone of voice, problem solving/critical thinking skills and their levels of empathy. If they are less than excellent on any of those then their application gets rejected as they have 10,000 other applicants who may have all the desired qualities. Something as small as a spelling mistake or a comma in the wrong place could have got your āMonzo ethosā colleaguesā applications binned.
I got through those bits but was rejected at assessment day (after a 300 mile round trip!) for not being empathetic enough. I personally think I have bags of empathy but I appreciate they are looking for really really (really!) high levels of empathy, like āoh your kidneys donāt work? Iāve got a spare one if you need it?ā type of empathy.
Where everyone wants to work for a company like Monzo, the bar is VERY high. Even if you think youāre the perfect candidate you might slip up slightly and another perfect candidate could get the job instead of you.
