What do people think of shops that only take cash

Is that a typo or did you mean £10a to be tenner?

Seems to be the barbers holding us all back from going cashless.

I echo the above though, I won’t even accept cash off families, they can monzo me the money via my monzo.me link. I hate handling cash.

Yes I meant tenner, sorry that is the text talk that is inbuilt in my memory :joy:

There are 4 pubs within a 5 minute walk of my house. 3 of them only take cash, even now!

I go to the cash only ones occasionally, but they have missed out on so much business from me, and I would imagine plenty of other people. The nearest cashpoint is about a 20 mins walk.

The people running these places need to give their heads a wobble!

I’ve only been once since and I was expecting an option on the terminal to add a tip. Plus I’m never quite sure if that money gets to them or not. The owner seems like a decent guy so I would imagine it does.

Tax evasion

There’s no excuse when over 80% of spend is on credit or debit cards and izettle exists.

I think they won’t get any money from me.

It’s so easy to take card payments now, with providers like SquareUp and SumUp in addition to the incumbents, there’s just no excuse not to. And I can’t imagine that the cost savings outweigh the loss of potential revenue.

Depends on the type of shop. I don’t carry cash so if somewhere isn’t accepting of card payments they are most likely losing out of my business

I try to avoid them unless forced or their service/product is good enough to warrant me having to go take out cash. My local (literally next-door) Chinese don’t take card but their food is so good and next door so convenient so they get all my spare coins :joy:.

There’s also an old mans style boozer which still doesn’t even have a card machine even after re-opening during COVID but I love the pub so they’re an exception too.

Harsh, but adapt or die.

That’s just inexcusable. I’d be boycotting them.

There’s only one place that gets cash off me and that’s the gym as they don’t do card however they’re the best one in the area so I’ll happily draw out some cash.

No where else will I use cash it’s card only or no transaction from me

The independent Ice Cream Van Man/Woman (alphabetical sorting only) generally prefer cash.
No transaction record, no comeback. 20% less loss. :icecream: :moneybag:

All our independent ones round here take card payments so that generic comparison doesn’t quite work

I’ve had this option at a restaurant before, so definitely possible.

Luckily our doesn’t

“Sorry kids, I’ve no cash on me”

So at Glastonbury Festival (and other festivals and events) they do take card at a lot of stalls and even the bars there, but they let out a hefty sigh when you ask to pay by card and for one reason only - Signal. Despite being sponsored by EE the signal at Glasto is utter crap. It’s in a valley. And there’s 200,000 in that valley connecting to 1 of 4 mobile networks. It’s a s***show. Your phone does not work. And the card machines suffer the same issue as they use mobile networks. And 50% of the time stall owners give up using them and insist on cash. And the cash machines cost £2.50 a pop and have huge queues.

But going back to shops… just like glasto, card machines are all well and good IF you have a connection.

Not sure where you live but in my part of Devon only 1 network has indoor signal and only 2 have outdoor signal. And I’m not out in the sticks… My partners old house was close to Exeter and yet it still had a guaranteed speed of 512k:

(yes that’s actually Kbps not Mbps…In 2020!)

I agree with all of these, especially that they’ve convinced themselves that customers are happy. I get so annoyed when I’m forced to pay in cash for something.

It’s always the usual culprits though. A local bakery moved in and they closed down pretty soon afterwards. Despite being significantly cheaper than arguably nicer than the Greggs even I still went to Greggs because it was just easier and offered a better experience overall.

I tend to avoid them lately.
Just use Apple Pay - never entered my passcode so many times!

Have you told them “it only plays the music when they are out of icecream, sorry!” yet?

Yes, and they believed me when they were young (under 5)

Then they got older and I think they don’t trust a word I say now :joy:
