We're working on a new look for the Monzo app

Device: iPhone 7 with iOS 12.3.1

Been using the new layout for some time, and the following feedback is after about 1 hour of use on the latest update. My generall summary is; great progress. Nearly there but some small bugs yet to resolve, all of the ones I’ve noticed have already been posted but here is my considered feedback.

Yes the app is much more responsive.

Swiping between pots is smooth and intuitive. I have not yet had an instance of “missing” the activation areas for each direction of swipe.

I feel that I see too many “adverts” in the app for overdrafts. On the account screen there is one just under the personal account and a second on at the bottom in the borrowing section. I only have 3 pots so can see both on screen at a time which feels like Monzo really wants me to have an overdraft and ‘overspend’, I know this is not the case but is a perception I have.

Almost. I like to have the screen showing the initial view (the cards visible, but also the top of the transactions/summary view). It can be hard to return to this view after swiping up or down (to show either the full transactions list or the full card view). It does not seem to be possible to “swipe and drop” back to this view, only get there by tapping the slider. Not sure if this is just me being ham fingered though.

No. i have had a discrepancy between the balance showing at the top of my account and the “left to spend” progress bar. I do not have budgets set.

When I swipe up to the full transactions list i no longer see my balance at the top of the screen. I much prefered that to the “left to spend” bar although that could be related to trust in the bar showing the correct figures.

In the old-old-old view with the pulse graph it was possible to see my balaance at a point in time. When reviewing historic transactions in my timeline this was really useful to see. I used this to review how much money I had at a given time of the month, see if I am on-track with spend to date through the month, etc. (note: budgets dont work for me as I get paid 4-weekly, 13 times a year).

I love the sort code/Account number view and the ability to copy but would be really useful to have the 3rd option for “copy both” to save back and forth when someone needs those details.

I have an Investec easy access savings pot and the pot picture does not show any more (just a boring blue rectangle).

Thank you and keep up the good work.

David

Do you have committed spend? I don’t have a budget set but the “Left to Spend Figure” is your total balance minus any committed spend not yet taken.

I love how on the new version there was always that split second delay updating when looking at a round up pot after making a purchase. Now the balance is instant.

Hey @Bruno :wave:t2:

Whilst in-app movements, and responsiveness is definitely improved - the initial “load-up” of my balance and recent spends if you will still seems to take a while. I get into the Home screen very quickly but am then sat there waiting for a while before my balance updates or my recent transactions pop in

I’m on an iPhone X most recent TestFlight version.

It feels very natural and I’ve not as yet had any problems with the movement - although it may be a problem for those on larger screens (this is just a guess).

Apart from the missing “total” figure (which I know is coming back) - it is quite clear what I have in what pots and what I have in my account - although it may be useful to have a “committed spend left” figure or something which on the “view all” screen tells me how much more of my committed spend is left to leave my account.

This is probably the thing I dislike the most - the swiping seems a little bit finicky, sometimes it all scrolls up to the top (or bottom) in one go and others it takes 2 swipes (from full card view, to peaking card view to full transaction view). I’m not sure that overall I like this animation as you can only scroll through transactions when it takes the whole screen up.

I have never used any of 4 buttons below the card and so the final “full card” view seems a tad useless IMO - maybe these buttons can be moved somewhere else?

I know it probably been mentioned but it would be great to have the days to go line on the summary on the transaction page. I find that proper useful. I know it’s still in the summary page I just think why not bring it to transaction page

Overall - Really like this.

Much prefer the cleaner UI & simplified bar at the bottom
Really like the percentage spent with link into budget
Like the easier ability to select different accounts
Having bank details at top is much clearer and also money spent

A few points;

  • No sure I like the “halfway up” scroll, like it as either down at the bottom or fully there
  • Instead of one card hovering over the other, I’d prefer it to be scroll left to right
  • On dates a summary of the amount spent that day (ala barclays etc) - total just to right of date rather than having to manually add it up
  • Dark mode on ios13

Keep up the great work!

Hi @bruno,

As people have already said, am really loving the direction the layout is going in. Went back to try the old layout and I can’t believe how dated it felt! A huge step in the right direction from me  All the main feedback I have has already been covered and

Here’s my feedback to the questions:

:apple: iPhone XR, most recent TestFlight version, iOS 13.0 PB (risking it, but it’s all working fine so far)

  • Yes, it feels pretty responsive overall.
  • Feels natural and always captures intent.
  • Disagree with what some people have said - the animation is not always smooth for me (ignoring pre-fetching issue). The card/pots animation does lag occasionally and isn’t consistent.
  • Would be good if there was a way of getting back to my current account at the top of the hierarchy quicker than if I swiped back through pots or go to view all.

 second this point sort of. It just doesn’t feel consistent.

  • Can’t see my pot goals on the home screen, which would be good if included.
  • Nope, doesn’t move in a weird way.
  • I hope so. No issues I’ve noticed.
  • Aside from seeing spending rate and easier monthly navigation which I see @hugo already mentioned is being included in the future, there’s nothing I could do before I can’t do now.

(Not related to new layout sorry, don’t know if this issue has already been mentioned, but the loading of “contacts on monzo” when bill splitting refreshes to alphabetical once already loaded, and often leads to pressing the wrong contact. I really hope this gets addressed :crossed_fingers: )

Thanks for the pointer. Yes it turns out the app is expecting a direct debit to be taken in 5 days so that would probably be it. Given that I think it is important to show both the balance and left to spend displays when scrolling through the transactions so I can make the choice whether to spend from an informed perspective.
On the inital view of the account I can see both:

On the swiped up view I can no longer see balance which previously showed between the profile and View All buttons:

Thanks

David

Hi. Love seeing progress and don’t miss the pulse graph at all. Always thought it was a bit of useless eye candy tbh. However I really miss seeing my balance as I scroll my feed. I appreciate it’s visible initially but disappears as soon as I scroll the feed. I never use summary so don’t miss that and therefore find the how much left to spend at the top of my feed a waste of space.

This is a long thread so I have only skimmed the posts, but does anyone know what has happened the the Android UI? It used to be beautiful and now looks - not beautiful. I can’t see my budget on the home screen anymore and the buttons are spread too wide, they would be better on multiple lines:

I’m getting this too (Android 8.1.0), and it’s very frustrating, to the point that I will probably turn off the feature in Labs for now. It feels natural to pull the drawer down from the top, and that’s the spot that causes this bug to happen.

Also, scrolling through the pots isn’t smooth for me on Android, especially when compared to on my iPad.

The buttons below the pots (and current account) are also partially obscured by the drawer when it is pulled as long as it can go - not sure if this one has already been mentioned.

Edit: I also echo what @stephenjames posted above.

You don’t have to scroll too far up to see the reason  Especially since people keep quoting stuff from it too :speak_no_evil:

To summarise. They broke it. The new improved design is now available for most - the rest will get it around the 8th July.

Lovely, thank you - i did try to find out but didn’t have patience to look!

Are you sure about this? I’m getting the same as what was shown above with the five buttons not fitting on the page, but I’m on the new navigation in Labs and I don’t have a joint account.

Yes. I’m only quoting what was said

Have a read of the announcement to see if you have the correct app version etc.

Everyone with the new nav has the issue with the icons (dependant on screen size, is fine on mine), but if you have a joint account with the initial new nav enabled, you have it without the scrolling cards and with a stuck down feed on initial load. Basically what we all had for 4 or 5 days before the latest update.

Basically, the icons overlapping the side of the screen isn’t the only issue the user above has, he is also lacking the scrolling and has a stuck down feed, which are issues you don’t have.

I’ve read the announcement, I’m on the new navigation. I wasn’t in the beta test, I’m on the new nav available through Labs.

Ok I was just talking about the five icons because that’s what @stephenjames mentioned in his post.

So to clarify, even Android users on the new navigation in Labs (who don’t have a joint account) have the issue with the five buttons not fitting properly, and the “new improved design now available to most” doesn’t fix this issue?

Correct. Bare in mind it is still a temporary issue as they have said the 5th button was only added whilst they work out some other bits.

The other thing is not everyone has the icons cut off, on some screen sizes (such as mine) it looks fine.

Now I see where the confusion is! :open_mouth:

@stephenjames wasn’t just referring to the buttons, so when you said that you have “the same as above” it looks like we both assumed you meant the missing budget as well as the icons.

Reading the feedback from people above, it seems that the buttons still are squashed in on the new design:
