Don’t thank me, it was @nexusmaniac who did the detailed write ups… The little Monzo nerd :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Been asked a few times if investments are same as gambling, so just going to write my thoughts on it (sorry - I waffle on I know!)

When you gamble, you often own nothing and are thinking it’s a quick solution to a situation. You act on impulse a desire to get more now. You almost crave the near win more than the ‘jackpot’.

Whereas, investing in shares, a pension etc, actually take a lot of self control. The understanding it will be a risk but will be long term (if day trading then it’s different again). You need to have money Infront of you to invest, you have to think can I “live” without it for long term. It’s a lot more a thought out choice.

Hope that explains my logic for this being different to a “bet”.

not sure I agree Danny, yes its not a immediate buzz, fix - whatever - ( I don’t appreciate what gamblers go through ) investing is an informed gamble , but still a gamble , things happen , events take over , you still risk your “stake” with shares.
Personally I look at Monzo and see how it works , see what it gives me with peace of mind over my spending etc etc and think, yes I like this product , I can see its uses, I can see its potential , am I willing to risk some of my money in that it will get better, more popular, more profitable - yes I am . Others might feel completely different that this and that doesn’t work for them , don’t like the app , support responses are not great at the moment etc ( haven’t used support for about 6 months so don’t know  ) .
Would they risk their money ? - maybe not - I like being part of Monzo , I appreciate the financial opportunity Monzo has given me of sharing being part of the success ( or not  ) - but it’s still a gamble

That’s actually pretty cheap for the industry… Seedrs charge a similar fee, plus 7% of investors’ profits at exit!

Completely get that  from my perspective, was thinking will investing make me go backwards and be wanting to go out and bet as a side effect of it. It’s a gamble but one I feel would be a controlled decission, rather than be risking my current life/debts.

If it’s gambling then so is putting it in an ISA or 0.01% government bonds. You are gambling that the government is going to remain solvent for many years, which personally I’m not completely sure of.

Monzo is what we former gamblers call a dead cert, a NAP, or a 1.01 train :steam_locomotive: :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: I wouldn’t call it gambling myself but respect others opinion that it is to them.

So £10 in and I get a special new card… Love the sounds of that

Tempting this time around.

I know I need to read the portfolio document in more detail - but is the only way to cash out of shares whenever Monzo decide to go public, if indeed they do?

for a tenner with the bonus of getting an "Investor " card I’d let it ride , by the time you cash out your shares depending on what vehicle is used to IPO you might owe a bit more money  - lol Halifax charge £12.50 / trade

Crowdcube don’t charge a fee at present if you can find your buyer.

Oh the tenner was just in jest!! Would hopefully throw a something a touch more at it.

Since one of the terms is that you need to be a Monzo account holder it will be interesting to see if there is a surge in signups after this announcement :face_with_monocle:

At time of writing the homepage is reporting that we’re at: 1,199,845…

They only have til midnight tonight

Excited for this! One thing I’ve not seen mentioned… will new investors get the investor app icon?

But all the ads are running as well so crowdfunding affect won’t be obvious

Hey there! The prospectus mentions that existing Crowdcube investors would get 2 days’ head start (3rd Dec vs 5th Dec)- am I right in guessing that means people through successfully invested in previous rounds?

Hello!
What is the difference between a Monzo investment and a fixed rate ISA?

Is there a minimum amount to be eligible for the investor card reward?

a fixed rate ISA is a fixed rate over a fixed period that is guaranteed , Monzo is a gamble that could potentially give you a large return - or lose your money
