Yes, it works. ATMs typically charge for withdrawals and always choose to pay in Euros.

The card will work just like any other bank card. As @Anarchist says be mindful to select pay in Euro’s or you’ll get the default conversion rate to GBP which will likely be poorer. Some merchants will say they can’t do that, don’t listen to them as you can.
I’m not sure about Italy, but in Spain & Portugal the MultiBanco one’s are free, the Euronet charge for cash withdrawal.
