Travelling with Monzo ✈️

Hi Justin,

Could you please create a new topic for Nepal (you’ve got the formatting spot on ;)) & it will be added to the directory at the beginning of this thread, to make it easy for other users to find

Alex, thanks for your reply. Sure. I’m not clear how to do that, though. Can you help?

No worries (it looks like @anon44204028’s created a new topic for you, for Nepal but you’ll want to create one for Tibet, unless he beats you to it…

To create a new topic, click the Monzo logo in the top left > new topic.

You’ll want to use the header Monzo in [country name] & Travelling with Monzo as the category. Just give me a shout if you have any issues

@alexs, sorry only now been re-reading the thread, so sorry for the late response. I think technically (politically) Tibet is considered part of China, so I’m expecting Monzo to work in a similar way there - though Tibet is a lot more remote, so not sure how widespread the use of cards will be. I do think the magstripe feature is likely to be useful there

Tibet is an Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China whereas Hong Kong and Macau are Special Administrative Regions of the People’s Republic of China. The flags of the respective SARs have been shown in their topic head. There is no specific flag for the region of Tibet so none has been included. Tibetan flags found on the internet are those used by independence and separatist movements so have been omitted to avoid political arguements in this forum.

Is there any way to find out the currency rates you get per transaction on Monzo?

Yes, since Monzo are giving you the wholesale MasterCard exchange rate, you can check it here Mastercard Currency Converter | Currency Exchange Rate Calculator

There’s been some more discussion on exactly what to expect here -

Monzo beats what you can get locally in Tenerife by nearly 2 cents in the pound, in that case.

That’s great to hear!

It’s what I’d expect too, as even ‘no commission’ money changers simply offer you a worse rate, to make their margin :grimacing:

Money changers claim ‘0% commission’ but charge 14% above sterling-euro spot rate

Sidenote to the travelling advice:

Make sure you share your photos with us too :camera_flash: We’d love to see where Monzo is being used!

With or without your Monzo card in the shot! - If the former, remember to hide those numbers

I have a couple of questions guys if anyone has experienced travelling to countries very far apart in quite short time frames and if there are any security issues with the card being declined? Essentially, I work in Afghanistan ( I’ll post my experiences etc. during my next trip, I’m on a leave rotation currently in the UK), anyway a few of the shops there within the US Army bases are owned and run by American businesses for obvious reasons and their transactions appear on my current account as being from Chicago I think, then some are from Afghanistan, and others the UK! Let alone my online shopping and travel via Europe then Dubai to get there!

Also, I forget what the fee’s etc. for foreign transactions are? and if there is anyone from Monzo reading this, whatever our experience with the prepaid card, will this be carried through with the current account cards? (i.e. will the rules and system behind the card etc. be the same).

Looking forward to receiving my investor card later this year!

Many thanks
Dean

re: fees - https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/consumers/get-support/convert-currency.html
What you see is what you get  No fx fees etc on Monzo’s end, check with the ATM you use for fees though.

I’m sure with regards to location you should be fine as long as you have internet connectivity on your phone so it can detect your location - turn location security off in the settings if you won’t be seeing the internet for a while and drop a line to the :monzo: team via the support option in the app and maybe they can give you an answer or work their magic!

I just got my card. Its awesome. Do I need to need to do anything special to use abroad ?

I’d recommend checking out this video for an overview on using Monzo abroad -

& have a look at the Monzo in [country name] topic for the country that you’re planning to visit, to see tips from other users about using Monzo there.

Also, it would be great if you could share your user number here (you’ll find it in your profile / setting’s screen) so that we can see how many user’s Monzo’s got to
