Hello, I fly out to tenerife on the 28th. The plan is to take some cash but ideally use my monzo card for most payments. I have seen monzo is widely accepted but my question is, do I need to do anythingto change currency or will it automatically just get taken? Also is it more expensive to use card due to the exchange rate ?
If you pay by card, it will ask you on the terminal what currency you want to use, always select the local currency. In this case euros.
Monzo, don’t charge a fee, they’ll pass on the FX rate to you and I think you’ll find that it’s surprisingly cheap

Be the same as mainland Spain which is fine with your Monzo card

I’ve just got back from 2 weeks in Lanzarote.
Didn’t take any cash at all. Nothing. Only Monzo cards (and said cards in Google Wallet of course). Not a single issue. As others have said, always choose the local currency (Euro) on a card/contactless pos terminal to avoid any hidden charges.
If you do use an ATM over there, again, choose Euro for the currency to be charged in, but there will be an unavoidable - and often expensive - charge made by the ATM service provider for using it.

If there is a Unicaja ATM available there’s no fee. There’s repeated attempts to get you to allow them to do the conversion, but no fee.

Either the person holding the terminal will ask which you currency you want to pay in (always say “Euro’s”), or they’ll hand you the terminal to choose. There’ll be 2 big buttons to tap on on the terminal’s touch screen, one is Euro and one is GBP - always tap on Euro
Same with ATM’s - there’ll be a choice on the touchscreen (or side buttons) between Euro and GBP - always choose Euro
