A globe with arrows swooshing around it could easily represent ‘travel’ without having to display any specific bike/car/train/boat/plane method.
that would be holidays to me
Hahah if actually does! Sorry that’s my iPhone icons this is what I meant
I knew someone would say that
Glad to be of service
That does sound pretty decent actually, I assumed too much from the screen full of icons!
I still think this is a non-trivial feature for Monzo to add and work through from an interface perspective.
Quick and simple win in comparison to longer complex features they have been working on such as the new Faster Payments Gateway.
They must have now got to the stage of hiring a lot more devs with a variety of experience and expertise with approaching 4 million customers, so I’m hoping they can get some devs to be put on this.
I wouldn’t like to suggest a timescale but “months” (more than one less than twelve) seems right to get this working, rather than measured in weeks or years. It’s been talked about for two years so they may have already dabbled in improving it.
Nothing in dev is ever trivial though “the amount of can you just do this x quickly” when it’s not a 5 min job, even the crazy idea of switching out an icon for another which I’m astonished they are even entertaining.
I waiting for the we got a lot of Twitter votes for train so we’ll stick with car.
When do I need to use ‘transport’ if I’m on foot, on my bike or on my skateboard? There is no expense!
Public (bus, train, ferry, plane, cab)
Private transport costs (servicing to running)
What else?
New shoes
New tyres
Maintenance
When you’re hiring a bike.

I do not think you are managing to make the point you think you are.
We’re talking about the transport category icon seen by all, not just that one poster.
The question you quoted and answered was specifically targeting the case of having an already-owned bike. If you wanted to make a general point, you shouldn’t have included that bit of the quote.
Back on track (chooo chooo!).
I’m sticking with not voting for this. Custom Categories is the solution.
Custom Categories is absolutely not trivial to implement (sorry @phildawson) but depending on how Monzo is built COULD be more straightforward than some other features (presuming the category hook in the transactions feed is based on an ID that looks up a ‘category’ table and displays whatever name/icon pair that matches).
Anything else here is noise (and some very pedantic noise too, it’s wonderful!)
Where have I said it was trivial? I’ve said it’s not trivial!
If you took all the features they build and maintain to run a bank, and made a list sorted by complexity and timescale to achieve, being able to pick from a wider list of icons and set the category title wouldn’t be near the top is my point.
A single Dev on their own app might be able to bang this out in a couple weeks for something like a budget tracker but of course it’s more involved making changes that affect banking, it needs to be right first time, check the impact, go through signoff, testing etc before implementing. So a few months and a couple devs would be my est but imo it’s not science and building a small wall rather than a whole house.

Thats a shame, there’s no trains near me
I’ll have to put my bus fare in general coz that will just annoy me
Yeah, not really the change I was asking for in my May 2016 post . Something more universal would have been better. Bus is at least used by more people, but it doesn’t have to be a literal vehicle.
Oh for fucks sake
This seems like such a pointless change! And dare I say it… London centric (where the tube, crossrail and the DLR are such big deals).
A train makes zero sense when the majority of transport for those not living in a city is by car, bus or taxi.
Edit: but it’s obviously popular with Twitter users, so
