And I agree with you nobody knows…yet we are all getting worked up about it …
It actually puts a chill down my spine that the government is comfortable with children not eating this winter so long as the rich get a tax break.
Even from a heartless and ruthless economic perspective it’s stupid. How is the economy supposed to grow long term if children can’t eat. They won’t get a proper education left unfed. Educating future generations is essential for long term growth.
From a human perspective, children in our country will go hungry to help fund a tax break for people earning over £150,000 a year. Is this the country we want to live in???
(probably the countries answer is, not really but Kier Starmer is a bit boring so I’ll vote to starve kids anyway).
I’m in angry rant territory again, time to go back to work!
Yeah, the other problem is that by having the freeze in brackets the 1% reduction is still resulting in more tax being paid anyway by more because people are hitting higher brackets naturally which really means it’s only less of a tax increase from April effectively.
Remember when they wanted to give free meals for the summer and the gov didn’t want to fund it… it’s cost was £120m… far far less than these cuts.
Like I say in Scotland it’s different and far more get free meals when on UC etc over the £7500 household income requirement in England but Scotland has higher taxes.
They’ve made it extremely apparent that all their ‘there’s no magic money tree’ rhetoric was just political.
Suddenly they’ve found an unlimited supply of money. Just when someone needed to swing the Tory membership into voting for them.
$1 = £1 is something to get worked up about. It’s a disaster if that happens.
Also it’s worth getting worked up over the fact the gov policy is the opposite of the BoE. One foot on the accelerator with the other on the brakes. I mean this is before we get to the whole decimation of exports that came because of Brexit. There is plenty to be angry about to be honest.
The retired won’t care yet but if you are young and trying to get on the housing ladder these are all huge issues of concern.
Some good news;
Bet the gov calls it a blatant giveaway, irresponsible and rip it’s costs, now if the bosses got free travel….
Goods exports to the EU were 16.9BN in May 2022 …there highest since 1997
Dollar parity good for exports / bad for imports however the Euro below parity with the dollar for the first time since early 2000s doesn’t help
BoE should be working with the Govt , BoEs remit is 2% inflation …failed miserably but they are independent - should have raised interest rates long ago , but they didn’t
Successive Govt should have built more houses I agree
I presume that’s adjusted for the crazy inflation?
HMRC reported that a huge swathe (around 33%) had stopped exporting to the eu because of the paperwork.
Im just relaying facts The EU has a similar rate of inflation to us
Source?
I mean inflation will cause a huge high to the value of trade but it can’t be compared with 1997 unless you remove inflation.
We are a net importer by some margin, so it’s bad for the economy overall.

I meant a link but I will get the the deets then.
Goods exports to the EU reached £16.9 billion in May 2022, their highest level since the series began in 1997; likely related to rising prices in 2022. Removing the effect of inflation, exports to the EU, excluding unspecified goods, rose to £13.9 billion in May 2022, the highest levels since December 2020.
I feel like you were a touch selective by quoting the first part and not the second part.
Obviously inflation goes up so the total number goes up. That doesn’t actually mean we are exporting more than anytime since 1997.
I dont think I said we were exporting more , did I ?
As Breville posted although you made a statement that was strictly accurate it was a fair bit misrepresentative of the truth based on adjusting for inflation it appears, always check these things are real comparatives adjusted for inflation as without that adjusted the numbers are fairly pointless.
I bet if they had numbers for pre 1997 then the export would be even higher than in the 1980’s but saying that is largely pointless and knowingly posting that is really a bit deceptive.
You can play semantics all you like, but you were trying to paint a picture by selectively quoting to suit your argument.
