It does baffle me a bit where people’s views are on how much a bank needs to do vs what they can actually do.
All these wants are really good to hear, and it’s great to have passion for something, and how you’d like your vision to be reality, but where is the line?
I do love Monzo and all that it has, I also like Revolut, and then Starling.
There are… checks … 1,804 posts on the new neon card colours and I honestly couldn’t care less. But that’s ok, because the very nature of forums like this is that some stuff will interest the reader, and some won’t.
Innovation at monzo, and comparison with competitors, plainly is on topic for this forum. Speculation and opinion is also fair game. But if you don’t like it, it’s better to ignore or contribute constructively, rather than shooting the messenger.
At the risk of prolonging the conversation, I’m not sure where “all doom and gloom” has come from.
As objectively as I can manage:
There’s not been much ticked off the Community wish list. But, as others have pointed out, that’s just a wish list. There’s no commitment from Monzo to do any of it. So I’m not critiquing them for this.
The pace of visible development has slowed. But, for balance, the quality of the work has increased (see the Balance section in Trends). I don’t think I should apologise for wanting a slightly higher pace of delivery momentum, but (again for balance) that’s kinda my problem rather than Monzo’s. But I’d rather be honest than self censor because a few folk on here don’t like it.
There is a whole lot of good stuff happening. Which is why I’m slightly baffled at this conversation. If you look at the tear downs, it looks like investments (or at least a waiting list) is going to kick off soon, along with some UI improvements. And news of an internal hack day gives me joy. I referenced some of this stuff in my previous message.
Finally, for the benefit of anyone who might be unclear on where I stand, my interest for being on here has always been to watch a bank getting built, and to offer some thoughts, feedback and (yes) constructive challenge. I hope to do that always respectfully and with sensitivity to individuals involved. If I’ve got that wrong on occasion, do drop me a DM, but I’m not sure that public criticism helps anyone, to be honest.
Okay two months left before we tally this all up! Wonder if we’ll have any rabbits out of hats before the Christmas release freeze is on us?
Somewhere in the bowels of Monzo HQ, Alan is outside the Chief Exec’s office, patiently poking TS’s PA with a blunt stick.
"But I really wanted to prove those forumites wrong. Just one question. Answer one question. Please. He doesn’t even need to know. Do it for him. Give me something."
The PA yawns, snaps Alan’s stick, and shoes him away, returning to the phone where they had been mid-call.
“yes, I know Plus and Premium payments from pots are ready to go. Yep, direct pots transfers too. But this comes from the absolute top. What? No, not Elon. Yes, we’ve tried selling to him at double the valuation. Enough. Listen. Don’t release those products this year. We can’t be seen to be working to their predictions. And that 7m user figure we smashed? No comms. Ever. We hid the current customer numbers for a reason… Now, go find Jonas and do Whatever It Takes to stop him leaving. What? How would I know? Last time it was a tub of guacamole and the Daily Star lettuce. Oh, one last thing. There’s a guy on the forum with a blue circle. It’s time he was dealt with…”
It’s funny how the conversation often divides along these lines with Monzo - what the community dreams of and what Monzo might or might not be doing.
As a sort of bottom line, Monzo just doesn’t have a standout financial product. Lending, current account etc… There are better alternatives. I’d love to see them come out with a market-beating and fully flexible savings account or the like, but there’s just no chance…
