£2,480 here.
Oh, me too. And it’s not like I just felt crazy that day and thought I’d do a CHAPS payment like a mad lad - the finance company made me do it like that.
“Fun” fact: the founder of Starling was on the small team that worked with the Bank of England to create CHAPS in the early 80s.
Prior to their work, it was all telegraphy based.
I’m a fountain of useless knowledge, sadly.
Me too. I was told Margaret Thatcher invented Mr Whippy ice cream. Haven’t ever checked. I’m keeping that as fact.
Finally, I can also see CHAPS payment option
Can’t wait to buy a lot of sweeties
Apparently she worked to make it better - rather than invite it from scratch:
Did Margaret Thatcher invent Mr Whippy ice cream?
No, Margaret Thatcher did not invent Mr Whippy ice cream. While she did work as a food scientist at J. Lyons and Co. in the 1950s, her contribution was in developing emulsifiers for ice cream, which helped to improve the texture of soft-serve ice cream.
The technology for soft-serve ice cream had already been developed in the United States, and Mr Whippy was a British adaptation of this concept.
I have only done it once and that was buying a house with cash and that’s because the money was over the limit to transfer easily and needed to be done.
Every car though has been either a card transaction or fps.
remember Faster Payments has only been around since 2008, and before that you’d have to either wait three working days for BACS, or if you wanted faster, pony up for CHAPS, or do it with cash.
I don’t think I’ve ever used it personally, though probably paid a conveyancer to do it on my behalf once.
It does seem like an odd feature to be introducing now though. What next, cheques?
Of course, you would. Retro is the thing nowadays
Growing up, mine was headed notepaper!
Collection long since disposed of.
Mine was stamps when I was in my early teens. A lot of the comics at the time had adverts for stamp collecting kits and that’s what started me off. That and my father was into stamps. I grew out of it in my late teens when IT took over
Last time I went private for surgery the consultant sent me an invoice asking for a cheque. I had to call his secretary to get bank details!
Some postal building society accounts still require a cheque to open. Melton is one near me.
Weird moment to throw Apple into the chat…
DVLA insist on them for some things.
They don’t if you open it online.
A friend recently had to send a cheque to some branch of the government but as they had no idea where their chequebook was, ended up having to use a Postal Order. (Which can only be purchased using cash, so they ended up transferring me the money so I could make a cash withdrawal from the Post Office. As we were both there at least the cashier didn’t have to hand me the cash to give to my friend to give back to the cashier).
Not a great trait then…
I think the answer to this is in the final notice the FCA issued!
I work for their NI counterpart so we’re supposed to like them, but I don’t think anyone does really
I have been campaigning against the insistance on cheques but, so far, unsuccessfully
