Starling Bank Chat (Part 2)

I personally so annoyed with overdraft options available automatically almost everywhere.
I never needed, and I never wanted it.
If I don’t have the money then don’t allow me spending “borrowed” money. Subscription is the same. If I can’t budget it then I can’t effort it and I need it to cancel.

But everybody has different interests.

You don’t have to accept the overdraft, it’s always a choice. They just let you know it’s available to you.

For credit score I think it’s good, correct me if I’m wrong but having an overdraft contributes to allowed credit and it shows that payments are being made even if you don’t go into your arranged overdraft right?

Overdrafts don’t count to your overall credit limit. Apps like ClearScore show the overdraft limit and overdraft used, and shows a payment history, but the overdraft is separate to your credit limit. I’ve never dipped into my overdraft for more than a day on payday due to how I manage what’s in the account, so I’m not sure what would ever be classed as a “missed” payment on a current account - over the overdraft limit I presume, if anything. Not gonna test it out

If something goes wrong and I need to urgently spend more money than I’ve budgeted for, I’d rather borrow in overdraft to ensure my mortgage payment goes through on time. Much, much, much easier to sort the overdraft after, than sort the mortgage shortfall later.

And in Starling it doesn’t cost me anything because I have five grand in savings in there.

Ahh okay

Typically there is grace period of 30 days on any mortgage payments. Thus you can transfer in mortgage payment in your own time.

Whereas overdraft gets charged straight away usually in fees.

Thus it is cheaper to sort the mortgage payment later.

I’ve just discovered you can press a single transaction in the list for some quick actions, too…

Long press menus are simultaneously very useful and stupid bad UI.

Early versions of Android were full of long press shortcuts but then they were slowly taken out in favour of more discoverable options.

People complain about junk drawers, but these are junk voids.

As long as the functions are also discoverable elsewhere, does that matter? Isn’t it just something extra?

I really like them, but a huge amount of people (even myself half the time) don’t know they’re there. iOS doesn’t do anything to highlight that a long press is available.

I don’t have a quick action option on my Android app, yet :slightly_frowning_face:

But, I noticed updated Switch page with short/flash videos on

What do you mean by “transport” in this context?

Yep - and also not correct. I suspect when he said ‘Transport’ he was either confused or meant to say ‘Transfers’.

The only issue I had with what Starling is blocking on virtual cards at the moment is Gambling. I know they’ve done that to stop people using them to get around the Gambling Block they can put on their account but I better solution would be to allow different blocks on virtual cards so that if someone does have an issue with gambling, maybe they could allow themselves a fixed amount from a space and use their virtual card to cover that. Although I’m not an expert in any sense in gambling addiction so maybe letting addicts place small bets might be bad anyway and it’s better, long term, to just stop them completely?

(and I don’t understand anyone who still wants to invest in Crypto)

Currently you cannot use Starling virtual cards to buy train tickets etc :expressionless:

That’s because you literally need a physical card to get train tickets out of ticket machines. That’s not a limitation just from Starling and with Monzo virtual cards you’d be in exactly the same situation. This also causes issues sometimes with how Chase have implemented their ‘no card number’ physical cards.

It’s good that Starling warn you about this.

Not a problem to use GPay for that, done it many times. And mainly, I do buy e-tickets anyway, which I get to my email

So you can use Starling virtual cards to buy that as normal.
