I like this idea. I do it using a transfer most nights rounding off current accounts & outing change in Savings accts. If Mondo had a sign up for this I would “Sign up”
I just want to add my interest in this feature. In fact the Save the change feature with Lloyds is currently the only reason why I feel bad about using my Monzo card; my savings are being neglected. I would be ecstatic to see this feature come to Monzo.
I already have an app on my iPhone that does this - called Moneybox.
I do this too, making sure all my bank accounts are rounded to the nearest £. Would be awesome if Monzo did it automatically.
This idea has now been added to the Extraordinary Ideas Board
One more for this extraordinarily effortless (and OCD friendly ) way of saving money. Please add it!
That’s a brilliant idea! More and more banks are now offering this so I’d love to see it in Monzo.
Hi
I’m currently with Lloyds and I must admit, I absolutely love their Save the Change product. Any chance Monzo will have savings accounts? I bet with your new tech you could easily implement something like that so when you make a purchase with the debit card it’s rounded up to the pound and that difference placed into a linked savings account?
This would be perfection for me and I can imagine many others as well. Get’s me saving without even thinking about it.
Exactly the same for me!! I’m generally terrible at saving so this feature keeps me using my Lloyds bank debit card
I miss this from my Lloyds account, and just came into the forum to suggest the idea myself lol. Definitely up for rounding up to the nearest £ to go into savings!
I’d love a feature like this where I could simply link my Virgin Money savings account.
I currently pay some of my wages in each month but doing extra shifts (not knowing how many I’ll be offered) over a base twenty hour contract it’s not easy to settle on a monthly amount for a standing order so this would be great to round the change and send it into my savings.
It’d be great if this was implemented without a moneybox integration. Moneybox has its own fees that really make it uneconomical for small amounts of money.
I agree! Since there’s so many different providers for this type of service, I’d be surprised if it’s built into the app.
Once Monzo’s API is ready, any provider could simply create their own integration with Monzo & build it into their own app.
Monzo wouldn’t need to be involved in setting the integration up or designing the UI which should make getting this sort of thing set up much quicker
Would it ever be possible for this to be implemented within Monzo itself? i.e. A savings account with round ups. If it is left to external services, there would be significant charges and fees that make it too expensive to use. It’d be brilliant if it was a native, simple, feature.
Monzo are going to build a virtual savings pots feature which will be their version of savings accounts, they’re on the roadmap here.
So if the app was built to enable this, I assume that you could select the saving pot that you want your change to be moved to & then use the funds from that pot, in whichever way you choose.
I’m not sure what you’re anticipating there though - there shouldn’t be any need for a provider to add extra charges in order to integrate with Monzo.
So I would expect to pay the same fees that I would pay currently, if my change was being invested with someone like Moneybox or none if it was being donated to charity & the app / integration was set up by a selfless developer.
Oh nice, I didn’t know there was a virtual account feature on the roadmap. That’s great!
Kinda makes my other point redundant. I was talking about moneybox specifically, which has its own fees. If we’re just rounding up loose change, these fees are substantial.
Thanks for clearing that up.
A similar concept exists in Spain. CaixaBank, one of Spain’s biggest Banks already does this BUT, it rounds up to the next 5€ and so makes some really decent monthly savings. The funds deposit to a linked Savings account.
Isn’t this on the roadmap as virtual savings pots?
Lloyds did it and it’s pretty great.
Once you’ve got the savings account, please implement it:

I thought Hugo’s first preview of the new current account app improvements was exciting but this could be even better…I just spotted this photo of a slide from a talk that Hugo gave earlier today, which appears to show an integration with Nutmeg*…
It looks like the user can scroll horizontally in the Card Accounts tab, to view details of 3rd party’s accounts that are integrated with Monzo

**Edit ** Turns out Monzo don’t have an actual agreement with Nutmeg…yet
