It’s an account with sort code and account number so in theory a type of bank account rather than pre paid card
Got this wrong
Pre paid but with sort code and account numbers that make topping up easy

The lines are becoming increasingly blurred, aren’t they?
If you are asking about FSCS protection then neither revolut nor transferwise offer this.
I was more wondering about the “offline” issue that pre-paid cards struggle with.
I appreciate my use of automatic petrol pumps and toll booths is likely to be limited (although there are plenty of toll booths in Spain).
I believe Revolut struggles with this (something to do with the pre authorisation of the card?)
It’s not enough to stop me using it, but it’s good to know if you can fill in the blanks!
That’s true as they are a sort of proxy account rather than a bank
@anon44204028 Richard has in the past provided some solid information to what is what and the protection that is offered
Ah, that makes sense. I suspect Transferwise may be affected by the same, but you could ask here:
Transferwise Borderless is effectively a prepaid card. It can be topped up by debit card, or by Faster Payment as there is a sort code and account number. It’s just an account with money in it - there’s no standing orders or direct debits, for instance.
I’ve used it, and it worked fine for me in Spain.
Choices
Maybe it can be simpler as in we just choose the colour we like
Green, Orange, Purple, Black etc
Transfer wise, Monzo, Starling, Revolut

Please note that we don’t hold a full banking licence and a Revolut card is a prepaid card.
Hi @nickh, that’s pretty much how I view Revolut.
Handy to have around and the lock-in facility is neat. Having said that, although it’s nice to get in control, I’ve rarely saved more than a few pence because I’ve never converted more that a couple of hundred pounds at any one time.
I signed up for Revolut ages ago and left it inactive since I didn’t need or want to pay for the physical card and don’t use any of their other services (eg currency exchange) that people might find useful. Recently they were offering a free physical card and I decided to opt for that. Explored about the app after ordering one, selected “ok” when asked to turn on location security or something and the app promptly locked me out and the pin I used to log in fine the first time would not work.
Apparently a common problem if you look at their forums, I don’t have thousands of £ in there but lots of people haven’t got access to their money. Entirely bizarre. I don’t know how it protects anyone if it locks the user themselves out.
Anyway, I messaged in-app chat and the system said they would get back to me in 24 hours. They got back to me after three days. I respond with all my personal information, but by then I have been disconnected and the bot promised to link me back to another operator. It’s been two days, and I’ve got the card I ordered after a week too. There’s an option to skip the chat and get your PIN if you input the card numbers, but that doesn’t work either looks like it’ll be a wait. I’d be immensely frustrated if I had loads of money in there. They need more COps for sure. The service is appalling and unresponsive on social media too.
Has anyone looked at the new update? Version 4.14. It says you can pay “people near me” which seems like a nice idea (if I actually get access to my account ). If anyone has successfully tried it, can you post screenshots? Perhaps something Monzo could do!
I really like Revolut, it has saved me plenty on fx. No longer being gouged by Barclays who are prohibited from applying commission within SEPA so make their cut through derisory margins.
It’s worth reading the full thread sometimes on dissatisfied posters on the Revolut community. What looks bad in the headline frequently turns out to be a case of not reading/understanding the T&Cs or deliberately trying to fiddle the system. When offering fx services it can attract some pretty nefarious characters so no surprise to me when accounts are suspended pending security checks.
Revolut gets a feedback rating of 4.7 on the Play Store so the vast majority of users are very happy.
I have just read an interesting article in the telegraph on Fintech banks
Revolut is actualy viewed highly against Monzo and Starling
So much so that Starling is now emulating some of the good features that Revolut provide
Sorry but Monzo with its new overseas ATM pricing plan is last in the pecking order
Things may change in the future ?
Can you link me to Monzos new pricing plan please.
There is no Monzo pricing plan - I think what he means is fees for ATM use abroad.
I think this the article @Chad is referring to;
I personally don’t see how Monzo is last in ‘pecking order’…
Revolut is good if you don’t need to contact the customer service, because that will try your patience immensely. I’m still stuck in limbo since they keep closing my chat prematurely and I have to repeat the whole process of answering security questions and they don’t seem to look at the chat history. Might actually just give up tbh. It’s not like I have a lot of money in it.
Have you followed Revoluts complaints policy? If chat isn’t solving the problem then I would give it a go. Would be interesting to see how well (or not) it works too.
It’s getting to the point where I just can’t be bothered with it anymore, so many of them don’t seem to know how to help and it took 6 staff members and a million disconnected chats to identify the possible issue. Since Revolut wasn’t helping me with it I had to ring up Apple too to try and retrieve my device info that gets assigned to you when you add a card to Apple Pay. Spent nearly an hour on the phone. I think it’s hilarious that they take over a day to reply but archive the chat the moment you don’t respond for an hour so you have to start all over again
Basic info about problem: got locked out after turning on location based security. Cannot use pin to log back in. Card used for initial top up with Apple Pay is now lost. Can prove it was the same card with bank statement but card number assigned is “device ID” which only you can see (and it’s gone after card is removed). Revolut says I can prove identity via amount of last top up or card number, but won’t let me use amount of last top up or my address to prove identity.
This is why I won’t put much money on my revolut card - there are way too many stories like this flying around for my comfort.
How much money are we talking about here, if you don’t mind me asking?
Stories like this make me want to start some kind of debt collections () company for consumers, whose purpose is to blast through shitty customer service to recover customer’s money, and keep a percentage if successful.
I signed up for Revolut. Never used it. Horror stories of terrible customer service dissuade me.
