Revolut Chat

Yup, logo’s on the right on the pride card. I remembered the card wrong though - the visa one looks nicer on the back. The orientation of the text is the other way around on the back.

Ah, I misread, it’s not.

I don’t know why I read logo, but the standard card has the logo on the left so not visible when inserted but the pride card is still visible. It doesn’t make a lot of difference as to where the actual chip is as my name isn’t on the front of the pride card.

I really do like the look of that new Revolut card. I wonder what happens when my card expires though, as I have two (Standard and Pride) will they be charging me for replacing my Standard card if I already have another active one…

The card ‘type’ is Charity, it’s not down as a standard card. I know that with standard you get an in-app notification to replace it for free. Hopefully the same happens.

They run free card notifications all the time with Revolut just keep your eyes open for it. Other than that a fiver one-off for a card isn’t too bad at all.

I know Revolut gets a lot of bad press especially with customer service but I’ve noticed a massive improvement over the last year or so. You could be waiting days previously but now they’ve got a massive support team it’s a few minutes max once you’ve finished battling with their customer service bot (tell it ‘human’ and it’ll put you straight through)

I use them regularly for international transfers and find the whole thing to be easier and on most occasions cheaper than TransferWise with no additional fees involved.

Moving out of beta in the US

I got the prompt in my Revolut app about this yesterday. Along with it came bank details for direct deposit for us American customers too, which is nice (they process debit card top-ups in the UK, which incurs a foreign transaction fee on many American debit cards). That being said, I get the feeling they’re at about the same place as N26 in terms of being a banking product suited for the US- they’re still missing features necessary for mainstream appeal to Americans. The main selling point they have going for them, from my perspective, is the multi-currency aspect; their rates are a lot better than Travelex’s card for anyone who wants to travel abroad and convert their money in advance.

There is no transaction fee for debit card top-ups for US account holds. It seems that they launched a fully loaded product in US. Not sure what you mean by missing features. They have budgeting, unlimited instant transfers & next day transfer to any bank account anywhere in the world, virtual card, robust security features, etc. They frequently update their app to improve it continuously.

Personally, I’d use Freetrade.

There’s now unlimited free instant trades. And they’re about to introduce fractional shares, meaning you don’t have to buy shares in whole amounts, you can buy whatever £ amount you want in a company.

The problem is from the US side. At a lot of banks, any transaction processed outside of the US will incur a foreign transaction fee, even if the transaction is made in US dollars. So topping up your Revolut card with a debit card from Chase, Citibank, US Bank, Wells Fargo, etc will cost you 3% from the bank side.

This depends on what it’s intended to be. If it wants to be a full replacement for a bank account, then comparing even to other online banks, support for writing and depositing cheques is certainly missing. It also doesn’t yet support Plaid for linking to certain payment apps that don’t do the old trial deposit system anymore. No support for either of the two major instant bank transfer systems in the US (Zelle/Popmoney), though this one isn’t unique to them.

Of course, if they’re not intending to be a conventional bank account, then as simply a multi-currency spending card with budgeting it’s perfectly fine.

They also have a couple of other shortcomings-

I don’t see any mention of them having access to free ATMs in the US. Including domestic withdrawals in that $300 monthly limit is going to be a tough sell. Another will remain to be seen, but basically, if they’re as trigger-happy on asking for source of funds verification as they are in Europe it’s also going to turn off a lot of Americans. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of another online bank asking for that kind of documentation as often as Revolut.

In answer to both of the above, I have used Revolut as an introduction to share trading and found it great.
Admittedly, I’m not talking about huge sums of money, but enough to give me an idea of how the the stock markets work (still very new to this game) and have actually manged to make a few pennies
My advice would be to have a play, if you have a bit of spare cash and see how you go on.

That’s news to me. I tried to top up with Ally bank card. There was no fee charged by Ally.

Check deposits seem to be a tricky one for all challenger banks. Soon the checks will be obsolete here in US.
Linking through Plaid is getting an easy way of connecting our accounts. I am sure Revolut, Monzo and other challenger banks will soon join the bandwagon.
As these neo banks offer instant transfers, I don’t see any need for Zelle/Popmoney. The money can be transferred to any bank account within a day and money can be received from any bank account.
Revolut allows free withdrawal of $300 from Allpoint ATM networks. This is indeed a smaller limit.
Both Revolut and Monzo have an advantage being a mobile only bank and therefore, they can easily bring upgrades and features within a short period of time.

Ally and most online only banks won’t. It’s mostly larger banks with physical branches that impose this fee (for example, if you’re trying to get cash into the account- cash->physical bank->Revolut). Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi, US Bank, Keybank, those kinds of banks. Also, it affects geo-restricted cards- for example, my Discover debit card doesn’t work outside of North America. My Venmo card doesn’t function outside the US at all. Thus, I can’t do top-ups from my Discover and Venmo accounts at all.

Most. Discover Bank considers their routing number invalid. I just tried.

For anyone who’s using the app has it recently had a major UI update? Just looking at the website and the UI looks completely different from the screenshots in the App Store.

Still the same as the screenshots, not updated to the UI showing on their website.
