Reducing our NAT Gateway cost with private networking between AWS and GCP

Hey everyone, I’m Dom

I work in the Infrastructure Platform team at Monzo.

We’ve recently been on a cost-savings drive to rein in our cloud spend. As part of this we realised the sheer amount of data we transferred from AWS to GCP and how much we were being charged in NAT gateway costs - traffic going out via the internet from our AWS servers.

I’ve written about how we setup private routing between our cloud environments to lower these costs. This work brought our costs down by around 60%!

I’m here if you have any questions

Very interesting! AWS bandwidth costs can spiral crazily as well.

Welcome to the community @domgoodwin !

No questions, but a great article to read. Nice to see such a critical business service get the limelight and hopefully recognition that it deserves.

This is super cool!

I implemented an almost identical solution where I work for connectivity between private clouds in GCP and Azure with plans to implement connectivity to AWS next year.

The ability to use the power of the cloud on a private network has enabled us to do so much more at a massive cost saving.
