Definitely like this idea. I’m currently using Monzo purely as my “spending money” account. To transition over to main account this would be a huge deal. I want to have separate pots for Bills, expenses, and going out.
For me there would be two main use cases:
- Annual bills divided by 12
- A sweep of any disposable cash at the end of the month into a pot that gets invested
It’d be nice to be able to create pots to use as ‘goals’:
Holiday, Car Insurance, Christmas Presents, Savings, Investments.
When you create pots you choose the percentage of available funds at the end of the month to go into each pot, but you can top up or withdraw from them at any point if you get a windfall etc or have to shift priorities
Main uses of pots for me:
Separating out DDs and SOs from main balance
Putting aside money you want to hold separately from main balance (savings, tax, etc.)
Shared pots to mimic joint accounts
Pots would be an great way to do away with spreadsheets that I have to run to keep track of multiple accounts which we use to save money for different events etc (Xmas, Birthday presents, holidays etc)
These would also be great for ensuring the main money in the account for bills is not accidentally drained on something else before the bill goes out.
The option to invest certain “long term” saving pots so they earn interest while you are saving for something would be extremely useful, or even in the future, offset your savings from your mortgage (the old virgin one account type idea)
The idea of rounding up transactions and stashing the round up amount into a savings pot seems like a pretty good idea… would be very interesting to see what this totalled at the end of the month / year!
Can’t wait to start testing them!
Be great if there was to have a Joint Pot to pool money with friends for say a holiday, housemates for house bills, or the other half for a special event
I love the Pool idea for that in this guy’s project.
Monzo, have you hired him!?!?!?
Before getting a Monzo current account, I often used my Monzo prepaid card as a ‘Dirty Card’. It usually had a limited balance, topped up just before transactions, and as I get instant notifications of any transactions, it’s safe.
Any places where I didn’t feel safe using my ‘dinosaur bank’ debit card for fear of fraud… that random petrol station, cash machines, buying drinks in a bar/pub, etc. …I’d proudly use my Monzo card.
What I’d like is a pot attached to a secondary ‘Dirty Card’ with Android/Apple pay. This secondary card would only accept transactions based on the pot balance.
I’d pay £5 for the privilege of receiving a pot based secondary card.
A virtual card number specifically for online transactions would also be great, again attached to a specific pot for security reasons. This virtual card number could be changed more regularly as there is no card to print.
The security on all debit/credit cards is longer fit for purpose. It’s an industry problem, not a Monzo problem to solve, but having a ‘Dirty Card’ or ‘Online Card’ could help protect the members who would use this service.
I like the term bucket
I would also like the opportunity to assign standing order and direct debits to the buckets, also the ability to set targets and finally to put time locks on the buckets too
It would be useful to have a bucket which is a virtual Monzo card for recurring payments separate from the other card
Finally a bucket designed for bills which automatically forecasts if you try to spend from it and automatically moves money to and from the main account
FUNDS, rainy day fund, holiday fund etc etc So I think they should be called Funds.
Love the name “vault” and the idea of joint pots! Stag/hen do, ski trips… limitless
Savings, vaults, pots, trees… Any name works for me.
I’m keen on new ways to manage, share and fill or grow the pots/trees. Be it save the change, regular payments, manual, scraping after pay day, having them set just for bills, just for holidays, food, seeing targets, dates, £££, sharing a goal and splitting with others etc etc. There a are lots of good suggestions already noted in this thread and hopefully lots that are taken forward.
I see “pots” as more useful for saving than protecting money for things like recurring spend - Monzo spotting that you have an outgoing every month and ringfencing it from spending should be distinct from being able to explicitly put money somewhere to keep it safe.
I think the most important feature for me would be the ability to dictate whether the money in your ‘pots’ is ‘locked’ in or not.
I’d like to be able to choose whether the money in my pots can be used to pay a direct debit that would otherwise fail (for example), or if it would protect the pot and its contents.
I think it’d be great to have shareable pots with the ability to only remove what you’ve put in (not sure if this would be an easy fix). Having it as a shareable account to say save for a group holiday would be fantastic.
Also then perhaps a projected savings time? It could constantly update on how far away you are from your aim based upon current and previous money put into the account. I think little things like that would be cool and almost make saving a little bit more fun.
I would suggest Depos as the name of pots like functionality)
Looks great @hugo . Would you consider a “Currency Pot” where the balance in the Pot is held in say Euro or US dollars? Card spending could then be set to pay from the currency pot whenever you incur a charge in that currency.
Appreciate that there would need to be a lot of work behind the scenes to manage the currency balances and exchange risk but this could be a killer feature.
That grannie image you put in my head didn’t go away until I found these
I think the best name is vaults. Like in that kids MA project. I like the idea of a locked vault and vault that cannot be opened for a set amount of time.
How about mattresses
