Overseas Bank Account

I didn’t need to pay anything into the Schwab’s account for them to send the debit card and chequebook. I did it recently.

Did any of you who applied receive this email?

When I applied online initially it asked me to call them.

Despite claiming to be for EU residents only, it looks like French neobank BForBank will let you apply from the UK:

I’m trying but will have to wait until I get home for my passport.

Wow interesting, I wonder if they’ll send a physical card as well.

I do have a French postal address they could send it to. Will report back.

After being constantly let down by CCF after HSBC exited the French market, I’ve opened an account with BNP Paribas today. It’s been a very easy process - an initial call for eligibility, followed up by another one with the branch I chose, outlining the process. The account was opened solely via email afterwards.

Got as far as the passport scanning and it rejected my passport as being non-EU:

Thanks for trying and reporting. Maybe try Sumeria, I heard it might work.

Darn. You’ve got the address and I’ve got the EU passport. So, both of us are scuppered on that one :frowning:

So it can’t be open with a UK address + EU passport?

Not sure , I didn’t get as far as the address part.

Most likely requires a French address then, maybe try the other online French bank that I mentioned.

My Schwab account has been opened but not activated/restricted. Called them today and they advised they’ll contact the US team to get it up and running. Still restricted as of now.

For those who have opened this account do they send the debit card automatically or do you need to request it?

You need to ask for the visa card and checkbook. You have to get the checkbook if you want the debit card.

Seeing as it’s an American debit card, it comes with other stuff like CDW for car rental and a bunch of others things.

Great thanks! Hopefully the account is fully open soon. They were very friendly on the phone.

I’m in the same boat.

The email says they’ll make contact to fully open the account. I’ve not had any call. Seems no point calling the UK branch from what you’ve discovered.

I had that email a few days ago and hadn’t heard from them so called today. They didn’t say much apart from they’ll pass it across to the US team once they’re in the office in an hour or so. He did ask my email address and could see me on his list. If it’s not open by Wednesday I’ll give them a call back.

To those wondering how to request the debit card and chequebooks. You need to log in on a desktop browser. Choose support and then ‘debit card card and checks’.

It will then give you a form which you will have to fill in and sign (you can use any online pdf editor to sign it). You then have to upload it via the message center on their website and they should review it and ship your card and chequebook. You may or may not recieve a call telling you there is a $100 minimum deposit.

Very old school indeed haha.

Great, thanks. Will do this if they ever get my account up and running. It’s still ‘suspended’.
