I’m afraid I can’t say anything positive about the name either, sorry. It won’t affect my usage of the card, after all it’s just a name, but I feel slightly disappointed. Maybe it’s my Britishness but I feel awkward as a grown man saying the name out loud. Just sounds childish. Appreciate the desire to keep the ‘M’ but think there must have been better options out there.
I’m sorry to say I’m not really loving the new name either. Mondo was perfect and it’s a shame it had to go. But I agree with the others that the hard ‘z’ makes it sound a bit gimmicky and childish (Gonzo from muppets springs to mind instantly). Keeping the M was a good decision, I love the logo, would even like a t shirt (any chance we can get these?!) but feel like the change should have been better.
Also a bit concerned and uncomfortable at the similarity in name and product to Monizo.com, which appears to be another U.K. fintech building a current account based around your mobile device. Surely this could cause some confusion? It’s only one letter out.
I think the guys at Mondo did really well asking everyone for suggestions in the first place, keeping the community involved. I can understand why we wouldn’t get to vote on the final few as that would have been impossible to keep domain names and twitter handles free.
Time will tell, I know we all get used to things over time. That and so far, even with just being a prepaid card, it’s still the best banking experience I’ve ever had.
My shouts exactly! Putting a Z in a name (that’s not a recognised word) feels immature and “start up-y”. When I tell my friends and family to signup to this great new bank, I will feel embarrassed to say the name Monzo.
I’m not loving the name but that’s most likely down to the fact I’m used to Mondo. As long as I get the banking service that I can see on the horizon then I don’t really care what the place is called as long as it’s not something like Barings or Clusterfucks ‘r’ Us.
I have to disagree with the majority here and say i like the new name Monzo, i do have to say like most others i am dissapointed its not a wow factor of a new name, but then like the fact its not too different to its original name Mondo, realistically if it was completely different i can imagine many Monzo users complaining because its too different and not inline with its original name and can imagine the name change being a much bigger thing. At first i wasnt sure on Monzo i didnt hate it or love it, but its different from all other banks and thats what makes Monzo stand out, its a new way of banking and its new name gives it that.
In all fairness Mondo sounded like Mondough whereas Monzo sounds like Monzo. Also Monzo did not give me the immediate thought of Gonzo until i read it here.
I suppose what Monzo could do is put a vote to the community whether we all like the new name or not, a simple yes or no on the app or community site should allow Monzo to get its true answer. I would certainly be voting yes to the new name. I can imagine many others doing the same or getting use to the new name eventually. To me I think most negatives here is because one person shared a negative opinion and all others have followed.
What I wanted to say but was too tired. Well articulated. Agree with professional Branding consultant point.
I have seen a light at the end of the Tunnell. When we have the ability to add our (hate to utter the word) Monzo card to Applepay Wallet for contactless payments in store ect, I won’t have to get my card out at all so no Silly name will risk funny looks by retail staff, please hurry up with this. I too cannot push this product , which I admire!, to my Friends & Family anymore . As soon as I said Monzo to my Partner she burst into Hysteeical laughter
When I read the message alerting me to the new name, I was well underwhelmed. Contrary to one suggestion here that the negativity is some sort of mass hysteria on this community forum, the negative feelings were immediate. I haven’t actually summed up the courage to tell any friends about the new name. As suggested by two other people above, I also feel a little embarrassed to mention it.
My immediate thought was “Monzo” was a childish work like “Bonzo [the] Dog” (Doo-Dah Band)? Crikey. But I was never a muppets fab, so hadn’t thought of Bonzo the Muppet until reading here. But really the negative contains in Italian really make we wonder whether this will survive. Getting the name wrong at company creation time could be considered an accident, but it doesn’t feel like this change has gone well either? I can understand sticking with an “M”, but the justifications given for Monzo have so far been weak or frivolous. Is there a systemic problem at Mon*o preventing the team from seeing the wider picture? If so, that’s a bad sign for the future business.
I hate to say, but I have started looking more at Starling and Atom again. Please start justifying the name and working on the negative connotations.
Hmmmm Mon*o - now there’s a name. ;p
Chris, my thoughts exactly. As long as the service is good then I’m sure we can put up with the name. The service mondo/zo provides to us all hasn’t changed and is still excellent. I for one have no intentions to look elsewhere.
Not a fan tbh. Mondo was good; it had connotations of money, whereas Monzo sounds a bit daft, like Gonzo, which is exactly the association everyone will make.
Do any trade mark experts among us know how Atom managed to pull off such a strong (and seemingly competitive) brand name? A quick search shows multiple company registrations under the same classes.
It’s bugging me that we (Monzo company & community) are doing everything better, right down to card colour, except the brand name
I think the Mondo thing happened because someone lodged a complaint/dispute. If an Atom trademark holder didn’t then I can only assume that’s why.
Ah, interesting. So Atom is potentially at risk to future challenges?
You can have many registered trademarks under the same name as long as the classes are different.
That was my initial thinking but the classes are the same.
Atom has there sh*t together as have Starling imho… That seem to be more thorough, whilst Mondonseem like moderns hippies with good intentions but should lay off the luvvy darling attitude & get serious.
I’m not quite sure how that relates to the new name But thankfully it is possible for them to be friendly, professional and innovative all at the same time!
I also don’t think I’d say Atom have their shit together. It doesn’t seem to have gone all that well so far…
I had two separate friends tip me off about this new card called Mondo - and they raved on about it. They showed me how it gives you a detailed breakdown of what you have spent. I was Interested. It looked good.
I waited for a month or two in the queue and finally received an email saying my card was ready. Then I found out Mondo was now Monzo. I almost don’t even want to receive it anymore. It really is embarrassing. It makes the whole brand sound like a joke. When it comes to people’s money the last thing you want to be associated with is a joke.
It’s not professional. I will still give it a go but my whole enthusiasm has kind of just been quashed. I just can’t take you seriously anymore.
Card colour…Nah! I have seen a picture and no just no.
