Nationwide Chat

Here’s the iOS version history.

So there was going to be an exciting update coming about four weeks ago. I guess they’ve taken a leaf from Monzo’s playbook :soon:

There are regular updates.

Jk. I don’t have a clue.

Nationwide sent me updated Ts&Cs, and it looks like they were already planning to ditch Paym on cost grounds in January. Wonder if other banks were planning the same, and that led to the service closing.

Does seem unnecessary given the tech we have today compared to 7 years ago.

Maybe they’ll rid the card reader too, I’m sure those cost a penny or two, but I guess mitigates risk of fraud so there’s a balance to be made there.

Same thing Amazon and PayPal used to be bad at, half the site would have a fresh design, but half of it would still be running off a 15 year old design. Makes me wonder how up to date the infrastructure running those services is.

The account took a few days to show up when I opened mine a few years ago.

@ndrw I have a savings account and opened a flex direct account, it took 24 hours to show on my app. It feels very basic app wise.

All my savings accounts with Nationwide have appeared straight away. I agree the app is basic, but it is easy to use and I’ve never had any issues with it.

The only issue I’ve ever had with it is that sometimes, after responding to a 3DS request to confirm a transaction, every time I open the app after that for a while keeps opening at the end of the 3DS screen (don’t remember what it says, I think there is a ‘Close’ button there), and I have to tap the hamburger icon and then go to my accounts manually.

This happens even if I swipe the app away to close it (on Android).

Just waiting for my card now the app has most stuff you need in it.

I just tried to report my debit card as lost to get the new design sent out. It is asking me to use the card reader to generate a code to verify the request. Ignoring the fact I haven’t actually lost it, something seems strange about having to use the card reader to verify a lost card… can’t quite put my finger on it…

I’m sure when I changed mine through the internet online banking there wasn’t any additional checks made.

I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think so. You used to get a £250 free overdraft with FlexPlus but that perk seems to have gone. With the overdraft I would’ve thought the credit check was more certain, but now I’m just back to ‘not sure’.

Removal of the Paym service
We’re withdrawing this service in January 2023. This is because the cost of providing it is
increasing, but very few of our current account members actually use it. As soon as we have
more details, including the exact date of withdrawal, we’ll put the information online at
nationwide.co.uk/paym. Plus, we’ll write directly to members who are currently signed up for
this service.
If you’ve already registered for Paym, then our agreement with you for the Paym service, as set
out in the Nationwide Paym Terms and Conditions, will end at the same time.
You can still send money using the Faster Payment Service. Even though you wont be able to
use Paym to make a payment from your current account, you’ll still be able to use our Banking
app, Internet Bank or branches or use Open Banking services to send money to someone using
the Faster Payments Services. To do this, you’ll need the name of the person you’re paying,
their sort code and their account number.

I thought paym is just Bacs / faster payment. Or maybe they don’t like all the operational costs with it (support, compliance checks etc). If a major bank withdraws from paym I guess it will be the death of quick bank transfers between banks.

I guess we will all be using Monzo, starling, revolut nearby payments.

Paym is being shut down completely by all banks, I don’t see how it’d affect regular bank transfers and faster payments though.

It is going for all banks. I assume it was never as popular as they thought it would be.

The Nationwide chat is absolutely pointless. It tells you that you can leave a message and come back later rather than wait, but the agent always closes the chat if you don’t respond in a few minutes.

Don’t tell me I can come back later if you are just going to close the chat anyway.

Sounds a bit like the Chat within NatWest and to an extent Barclays. In the former you get not a lot, in Barclays I’ve found to be hit and miss.

So far the only fintech experience I’ve had is with First Direct.

Remember this being a pain from another thread, was this going from FlexDirect to FlexPlus, and then down to FlexAccount?

That’s annoying as I was hoping to do the same, and assumed as it gave the option to do it with online banking it’d just go through.
