Why don’t you just pay £4 into your new account?

So PayPal can be one, any other platforms can set up active direct debits but not collect/collect on command?

Correct.

Though I just use my O2 refresh contract as that’s two direct debits itself. I know when my bill is due so if it goes wrong I can just make a card payment but don’t think I’ve had to yet.

Nationwide are refusing to pay me the incentive even though they have admitted it’s their fault, what can I do?

I made the switch to nationwide from HSBC with 3 active direct debits, got the texts to say the switch will complete on the 5th October, so anyways, seen the new account get added to my nationwide, then I seen the 3 active direct debits get added to my new nationwide account, got my pin then card through the post, then my money got moved, everything going good, got the txt to say my switch had completed. HSBC account now closed. So Monday 9th I got a notification on my watch to say my nationwide account has been removed from Apple Pay, checked my nationwide app and the account had been removed, so I called nationwide, they said there was a problem with the switch and they would get someone from the switch team to contact me, on Tuesday 10th a woman from the switch team called me, she said the account got closed my accident and she would reopen the account for me and add the direct debits back but asked if I could pay the direct debits just in case they were not set up in time, I already paid the direct debit manually when the account closed. So I asked her about the incentive and she said I would still get it, so I was happy with that. I contacted nationwide tonight via the message, they came back to me to say I did not transfer the direct debits over and were done manually, I told them they were done with the switch but yous were adding my direct debit back after accidentally closing my account but they just kept saying they were not done by the switch. Is there anything I can do? Surly they must see on their records about the accidental closure on there behalf? Sorry for the long read, quite annoyed by this.

I’ve just opened up their flex direct accounts. Not done the switch coz I’m keeping Monzo as my main account. Using Nationwide as my savings bank I think. Always best having two banks and probably the better option to have my savings in a brinks and mortar bank/building society (also best for paying in cheques as Monzo don’t have this feature yet) :stuck_out_tongue: not sure if everyone knows or if it’s been discussed previously but nationwide are doing their promo as their the only bank which are keeping its branches open and not closing them - and are the only bank with the most branches. The small print says they this is only valid until 2026. So in 3 years time we may see them closing branches - hense why their new accounts stipulate what people want , normal flex, flex direct etc. it’s a barometer of who’s going digital in what areas of the country. Clever!

Raise a formal complaint, they’re generally generous when looking to resolve and would likely uphold your complaint.

Complain through their online (website) banking, always found that easier and usually respond within a day.

Virtue signalling from the building society which unilaterally pulled out of southeast London a decade ago with no f**ks given (It opened two brand new branches in the Square Mile at the same time)

Personally, I don’t get it. I don’t understand the desire to go to a branch, and I don’t see the appeal of a bank who insists on keeping them open. It all seems rather short sighted.

But others do and plenty like being able to go into a branch and talk to someone face to face. For some things it can really make a difference.

Mortgages for example, I wouldn’t want to be trying to arrange one of those through purely an app and using messaging to cover everything. It’s much nicer when you can sit opposite someone and talk to them.

Nothing that can’t be done over the phone or over a video call if you want to see someone.
We got our mortgage online, from start to finish. I think we only ever spoke to a human once over the phone for a few minutes, to clarify something, but everything else happened online and it was automated. I sent some evidence of income etc. by email, I assume those were seen by a human at some point also.

And that’s fine for you, but it might not work for everyone. Video calls are good but you still lose some of that personal interaction.

95% of my personal interaction with a bank is via their app or banking website. However I like that I have the option if needed to go and talk to someone in person.

Yeah I recon by 2030 they will be no bank buildings in our towns and cities because the need won’t be there. Some older people will struggle and I think this is why banks are trying to teach older people to go digital and pay things directly from their accounts. I love the fact I can manage everything from an app or phone call in the comfort of my own home lol it’s the same with cash… I never use it, everything is paid on card

It does surprise me how many “cash is king” comments I see on a lot of article, and how many people insist on taking cash out to pay for everything for various reasons (like stopping the government tracking what Brenda from Derby is buying at Morrisons or giving the government control over what people spend money on). Personally the only time I can recall using cash in recent years was to get a Chinese at lunch from the market as they only took cash, and even that was a pain when half the machines in walking distance were broken/empty/had a queue 5 people deep. I can’t think of anything worse than to keep having to make sure you have enough notes on you to cover whatever you may need to buy, and carrying around a bag of change.

Never go to Germany then. Germans seem quite commonly to go around with wallets 2cm or more thick because they do pay for many things in cash. Yes, shops do take cards but we were frequently the only paying by card in the local supermarket.

I think that your possibly over optimistic, you’d have to convert all business to card only to start with. You’d have to remove cheques or all banks would have to allow electronic input of cheques. Not everyone has access to a mobile phone or computer or internet, so they use banks to make transfers or get statement prints or mini statements.

You’d also have to cater for all those that prefer cash as well.

Everyday is a learning day. I never knew they weren’t fully compatible.

I go to Germany a lot and never have an issue with card only payments. Can’t recall the last time I had cash on me.

Even the places that everyone pays with cash have a card machine somewhere. I don’t care if everyone else pays in cash, so long as I can pay by card or go grab some cash nearby if required.

So do keep going to Germany! :upside_down_face:

PS. I actually do recall the last time I got cash there - a bar in Germany that was cash only, but they just said to get out €20 and then gave us drinks just over that value and charged us only the €20. So it worked out better for us really!
