Monzo Staff Weekly Q&A - Jim Amey (Night COps Captain)

The Theory of Everything, keep an eye out in the Cambridge party scene

It’s much appreciated!

I’d say not necessarily unusual, but I once spent around 9 hours on a Sunday being updated on somebodies bachelor party as they moved from pub to pub, was definitely a highlight on that day every time that conversation popped to the top! :joy:

How many cups of tea do the night Cops drink in an hour and do you take in turns making them

Pineapple on pizza…

Lets just say it isn’t my jam. I’m a strong supporter of a classic pepperoni with maybe something a bit spicy added depending on my mood (and the pizza place).

I’ve been doing 3pm-Midnight since I started at Monzo and came from a coffee shop, so avoid the stuff where I can! :coffee:️:no_entry_sign:As you don’t start until the afternoon you never have to set an alarm (it’s honestly such an amazing thing) and have some time to either chill out or in my case go to the gym before a shift which leaves you energised for the rest of the day (and night)! My sleep pattern tends to keep me up until 1 or 2 regardless as well.

As for features, I’m super excited to (finally) get spending targets on Android soon :crossed_fingers:but mainly about the sheer number of things that we can do with Pots, from the just launched Coin Jar to my dream of having my salary sort itself into different Pots when it comes in each month, then I will know instantly how much I have to waste on things like Starlord helmets…

This is a fantastic question, often at Monzo I feel like we assume that everyone knows our jargon but that isn’t necessarily the case!

As a Squad Captain I lead a team of 9 people and make sure that they are getting what they want and need out of the job and that our lovely Monzo users are getting what they need from us in support to have trust and faith in us as the people holding their money. This is through doing things like Quality Assurance checking on conversations and having weekly development meetings with the people in my team to help them reach their goals.

I got into Star Trek when I was around 6 because my brother brought the pilot episode of Voyager home and the finale of Deep Space Nine, now those that know their Trek (and in general TV shows) know that the finale is never a good place to start.

Therefore I have a strong nostalgia attachment to Captain Janeway and she’s my favourite to this day, Picard couldn’t have got away with saying ‘There’s coffee in that nebula’.

I also had the pleasure of hearing Kate Mulgrew talk at the Star Trek London convention back in 2012 and it’s clear she has a huge passion for what she does and that she’s a huge inspiration to women (and men) across the globe. I’d recommend reading her autobiography if you can spare an evening or two (depending on how fast you like to read).

There are fewer queries (as our users are mainly based in the UK) but there are also fewer night COps so the work load is pretty even!

I think at the moment as our users are primarily UK based, any US/Wales based COps working night COp hours would be counted as night COps as it makes most sense for them to be directly interfacing with people working the later hours in the UK, even if the sun is high in the sky where they are. Should we decide to go beyond the UK in the future though… Who knows

Overall though, I like to think as all COps as just that, COps regardless of the hours we work. We’re all one big happy family in my mind, not three separate families that talk every now and then!

We have 30 minute stand ups in our teams to have a catch up about whats happened in the day in both our work and personal lives so we never feel like we’re too far from each other (even if we only see each other on a screen most of the time)!

The most motivating thing in support is… Also having support. I know that I have colleagues that I can rely on to be there for a work chat, a personal chat or just a second opinion as and when I need them and that for me is not only something that you don’t find in other places to the same extent (from my experience) but is also a huge driver (as I want them to feel the same about me).

As for people… Under the influence. There is definitely an increase % wise on Friday/Saturday night but it’s still a very minor amount, most people tend not to want to show their nights out to their bank!

As for COps asked for numbers… It’s never happened to me :disappointed:although I did get invited to join somebody in Italy once… We’ve had a couple of occasions where people in support have been asked out on dates though (please don’t do this)! :revolving_hearts:

I work from home so as soon as I get home is… Always

But I tend to do a bit of both, when I’ve worked days in the past my free time has definitely been very after work heavy, with my shift being in the middle of my body clocks day I tend to have a more even split before and after work which is quite nice (although it is a bit of a nightmare for socialising).

As for Wales being abroad, mentally I consider abroad anything which requires travelling off the mainland!

We’re all remote, although one of my fellow night Captains works from the office!

My favourite thing so far has been seeing people come out of their shells as the week has gone on, it’s very easy to not really… Be yourself over a computer screen for fear of being judged the second you click hang up on a hang out.

It’s been fascinating and amazing to see the huge range of personalities coming out over the week and how well we gel as a team, even though we don’t get to see each other every day.

No need to apologise, it’s fantastic and I’m happy to answer any questions you have about it!
