Monzo Premium: Collected Community Feedback 2023

being cynical could be that it’d cost too much vs having people to manually enrol onto / claim. i.e. hoping people forget and loose out on the cashback/discount.

This would make sense, though I feel Lloyds always asked me to sign up for Everyday Rewards so it’s kinda an indirect push for numbers but not sales. Wonder what overall take-up is.

In terms of offers, how does somewhere like Revolut manage to get or afford the sheer number of cash back offers they have? Genuinely been curious as while I don’t use them, there are just so many.

Part of me wonders if some of them use them as their accounts.

Another thought, inspired by @ndrw and @mikez in the What's the last bit of tech you bought? - #4582 by ndrw topic…

I’d like a pair of free (or discounted) Yubikeys please! And a way to use them as 2FA to get into your Monzo account for advanced users.

Two more things.

`1. Sorry if this is a duplicate, but please work with Flow to bring them to the UK. Then give it to Premium users for free. Buy them if you have to. Thanks.

2a. So we love the interest rate on the instant access savings pot. The artificial limitation on the number you can have, and using it as a bills pot, scheduling withdrawals less so. How about offering these as Premium features?

2b. How the savings pot interacted with Premium was clearly unclear. :pensive: Next time (or this time pls) maybe just having Premium interest excluding the savings pot - but give Premium users a bonus rate. Doesn’t have to be huge, but an extra 0.1% would be a nice touch and make us feel valued. (Note: please don’t do the first thing without the second thing. That would be Bad).

Hi there, I’m Dessy – a user researcher here at Monzo. I’m curious about your suggestion

100 categories
100 pots

Can you elaborate on how this would be useful for you?

Hey Dessy, I hate to be contrary, but shouldn’t the question be why there are these limits, rather than trying to explain a negative (why there shouldn’t be)?

Hi Dessy. Personally it wouldn’t be useful to me, I only have about 6 pots and 10 categories, but it’s a frequent request around these parts and seems like an arbitrary limit that could “easily” be changed for those that need it.

@Alexxxxx was the person I was thinking of when I said it

Yeah I would echo exactly what @Peter_G and @Revels have said above.

Surely the starting point should be maximum utility, with limitations only introduced if necessary.

My primary reason for opening my Mondo account and staying with Monzo ever since has been to keep track of my spending. Custom categories are extremely useful for that but too limited for me at 50.

@tjvr has said (A big update to connected accounts - #43 by tjvr) there is no particular reason for the current limit… so if any customers at all are asking for a greater limit, and I assume you must have metrics showing more than 1 customer (me) having hit the 50 category limit, why would you not increase it?

I really need more than 50 categories. I’m bumping up to the limit the whole time and I don’t like relying on the hack!

Actually to edit: I’m at about 55 with the hack. I just don’t want to be artificially restricted.

I really think we need to flip the conversation to “why should there be a limit?” rather than to justify why we need more!

Hello, Dessy here – a user researcher at Monzo  Thanks so much for sharing all your thoughts! I’m curious about all the insurance cover you mentioned

  • Extend the phone insurance to cover family,
  • Things like bike, home contents, gadget etc insurance in app
  • Access to wills, life insurance, etc type products.

If you don’t mind sharing – which of these do you currently have and where did you get them from (a bank, a big insurance company, digital insurer). If Monzo were to offer these, what would it take for you to switch?

I know you asked @BritishLibrary this but this is something that might tempt me back one day. The main reason I bank elsewhere for premium is that these either come with the account for free or they are lumped in as a package. Let me elaborate:

  • Currently I have to Pay separately for mobile and only get travel insurance for free. If I could have all family members covered for both** travel and insurance for one price, that would be next level.
  • I have life insurance elsewhere because banks don’t often offer anything decent. A good life insurance product would be interesting.
  • I have other things (bikes etc) insured elsewhere but again the ability to consolidate direct debits would be really useful.

For me premium would tempt me back if:

  • Everyone was covered for both travel and mobile
  • It was either a lump sum or free if you met certain requirements
  • You had premium phone/chat access (which is actual live chat)
  • You could do banking via phone/iPad/Web

Sure thing!

  • Phone - direct throgh Apple via Apple Care + Loss and Damage
  • Bike - Originaly got the policy through Monzo Plus and Laka - I’d say Laka would be the “goal” for in app digital insurance approach. So smooth and I don’t need to deal with call centres.
  • Gadget - I don’t have at the mo, but looking for a few bits of camera insurance, not quite sure what’s covered on home contents.
  • Home contents - via a traditional insurance search (probably through my money supermarket).
  • Life Insurance, again sought through an online broker for a somewhat traditional policy.

The thing I’d like in this regard is basically being able to manage the policy in app too. I think Laka is the closest version of what I’d like the insurance side of Monzo to be. If I could do that IN MONZO I would be a very happy bunny. I just don’t enjoy the “Great you’ve signed up to Premium; here is your 5,000 page AXA underwritten by Allianz Corp Mega Internaltional Policy. Call us 0118 999 881 999 119 725 3 and maybe we’ll deal” vibe that Premium currently has.

The phone insurance bit - I think that’s more about my prefernce for the Apple Policy over the potential non-OEM approach of Premium.

Depending on “the thing” - I think for most, it would be ease of sign up and management that I would like. But critially the focus on the management side once I have the policy. If I’m still going to have the hurdles of a traditional policy to deal with and manage, then I have no motivator to switch I guess.

With the assumption that the policy is comparable in terms of cover / defacto rating etc.

I have been using Premium since it was released and I have been looking around and considering switching although I love some feature of Premium.

My priority list:

  1. Family travel insurance for pre-existing conditions (I wouldn’t mind paying an extra for this)
  2. Family phone insurance
  3. Add transactions from connected cards to shared tabs and split bills
  4. Travel insurance with car breakdown cover
  5. Better interest rates
  6. New offerings like content insurance (currently paying Urban Jungle £25 per month)
  7. Premium for Joint Accounts?

I think Premium should be free if you meet a certain criteria and pay a certain amount in. Similar to Barclays.

I think that Monzo’s world wide travel insurance should include comprehensive Covid/pandemic cover similar to Barclays, Nationwide or Natwest’s travel insurance.

As far as I’m aware, no other packaged bank account offers a streaming service as part of the monthly fee, e.g. Spotify, Netflix, Disney+ etc. which might be a good one, even in place of something else like the Offers or the Interest :man_shrugging:

The closest to this was the NatWest Silver Current Account about 10-12 years ago when you could get one free LoveFilm DVD per month for £10 per month, so a free premium streaming service would be good to include I reckon :eyes:

Silver Club Lloyds.

Travel, phone and roadside breakdown cover £10, plus £3 unless you pay in £2,000 a month, and choose a perk for free, and Disney Plus is one of those for 12 months.
