You should always have multiple payment options, any card will have acceptance issues. Monzo has improved acceptance with the current account, but nothing is perfect. My suggestions is 3*3:
- Three cards.
- Three different issuers with different back end providers - e.g. Lloyds and Halifax share a back end).
- Three different networks (e.g. Mastercard, American Express, Discover/Diner’s, UnionPay, JCB, etc).
Ideally, you cover this with no foreign transaction fees, too. This should cover most (but still not all) situations for most travel (not all, e.g. if one of the networks isn’t UnionPay you’ll have major issues in China).
Absolutely. I would add that it makes sense to keep the cards in separate pockets, bags, etc.
