Monzo Labs: Connected Credit Cards

Looks spot on :ok_hand: much better than the previous light blue :hot_coral_heart:

I found the experience relatively simple, however I forgot my memorable word in Barclaycard (silly me I know) but the memorable word hint didn’t pull through to remind me. Maybe this could be added?

Plus, the memorable word states it should be between 6-9 characters, but when I reset my memorable word earlier it only allows between 6-8 characters so this should probably need looking into as well.

Other than that, I like it a lot and it pulls through very quickly, looks slick and is a lot more accurate than I gave it credit for :+1:

What are we looking for feedback on?

If the connection flow works, or not
If your balance and available credit are correct, or not
Whether or not it helps to see your balance listed within Monzo.
What problems you think this could solve for you, with a little more work.

Yes to all. Connected flawlessly, balance shown is correct. Well, considering I check my Monzo balance a monzillion times a day and my Barclaycard balance once in a month or two, it’s definitely useful to have it there shown next to my Monzo balance so that I don’t forget about it and always aware of how much I owe. This is awesome!

Would be great to incorporate repayment into this somehow. Like setting up a new recurring payment or a one-off payment. Preferably via Monzo’s existing payment functionality, like I already have 4 different recurring payments going from Monzo to my Halifax credit card (all in different amounts and different expiry dates, I use this when I buy something and then split the cost over 12 months or 6 or any other number of months depending what I buy, like if I buy jeans they normally last 6-12 months before they start getting holes and I need to replace them so I’ll just add a new recurring payment for that duration), but it’s slightly tricky to do it manually, so if there was an option that would prefil the bank details and reference number that would make life 100 times easier.

It is.

The B account app is ok, basic compared to Monzo but it’s still pretty new and being developed all the time. It has the idea of Pots too although not as well crafted as Monzo.

@Feathers did your balance update correctly to reflect your B&Q trip?

I was literally typing as you asked…

The balance (and available credit) updated at 6pm (+/- 10 mins) as I expected. Clearly, pending transactions are included in their reporting

The BCard app was much earlier (as was Tandem) and I’ve been thinking about how useful that is or isn’t.

Tandem do a fetch when you open the app which is a real pain to wait for (which I feel compelled to do). Even though it’s only 10s of seconds it takes (subjectively) too long. As a result I much prefer a background refresh with a ‘staleness’ indication as Monzo provides. Whether 6 hours is a ‘correct’ interval, I’m not ready to commit to yet.

Other thoughts

On the topic of what to do with the balance now that I have access to it, my desire for updating the future summary payment in line with the appropriate statement balance as purchases are made is firming up rapidly. My monthly statements are too variable to be treated any other way (except for Tandem as previously discussed).

I’ve always used an external finance package and this is what I do for all but one cards already. My money management is all about the current account balance on the day before payday.

Could someone help me here?
I was able to link my barclaycard the first time with the correct credentials.
Only managed to see the card once on the app. After closing it and re-opening it, it’s no longer there and every time I put in my credentials, they show as incorrect.
Either I’m doing something wrong or there’s something wrong on Monzo’s side? Has anything changed when it comes to authentication?
Thanks in advance

Hey -We’ve not made any changes to authentication - I think that might be unrelated to the card disappearing (which we’ll investigate)
Are you able to sign in to the Barclaycard website/app with those details?

Works perfect for me. Biggest pain was remembering all my passcodes but that’s not Monzo’s fault it’s mine .

Connection worked first time no issues.

Balance is correct as is available credit. Will be absolutely buzzing when Amex is integrated too I only have an Amex and Barclaycard and current have a pot where I put Amex monies through the month using an IFTTT shortcut.

May have been mentioned already (I don’t have time to scroll through 232 replies) but I can’t see any way of telling which of my pots are locked. In the horizontal scrolling UI, there was a padlock showing over the pot image, but on new layout, you cannot tell a pot is lock by glancing at the list :lock:

It’s not showing on this new layout, you have to physically click on the pots to see if it’s locked or not. A bit of bummer . Hope they will fix it

Id rather they fixed the pots to be actually locked first :joy::joy:

I have an AMEX and a lloyds credit. I may switch to Barclay credit card.

Only now is wait to see if they support Lloyds

Details work fine on Barclaycards website

Will this credit card info be pushed into Summary at some point? And if so, could you allow people to ‘Exclude a card from Summary’? This is because I have a Barclaycard but it’s a 0% spending one so I don’t want it to count any of it to my daily/monthly spending.

I have opted in and connected. After 2 days the card and information disappeared from my account screen without warning. I reconnected again and all seems to be okay.

I like the concept of seeing my credit card balances in one place. It could be a way to move me away from the budgeting apps. But I think there is some way to go to get to that level, as you said you are aware. Eg transaction data.

Aside from that stability issue I would think it can be rolled out and developed further.

Works great! Really good idea to keep track. I didn’t get any notification when the card was set up ready to view though. The card was set up almost immediately. Thanks

New Observation

I’m not sure what’s going on in the background but the app is now reporting 14 hours since the last balance update which implies that 2 of the 6 hourly updates may have been missed. (Note: I haven’t spent anything on the card since Friday so I can’t tell if the balance is stale or just the timer.)

Hey all - small update . We found an issue in our scheduler that has resulted in some people’s cards being disconnected from Monzo. This won’t have any impact on your Barclaycard account itself, but will mean you’ll need to reconnect your card again.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused!

We are working our way through all the bugs and issues causing this sort of thing to happen and we’ll make sure its as solid as possible before we take it out of labs. Thanks for your patience!
