Iāve just got back today from 3 weeks in and around Buenos Aires (and a day in Colonia, Uruguay) and found I could use my Monzo card in many places- but I did need to check first. Getting cash out or changed is difficult and expensive. I also encountered repeated issues when different agencies took payment more than once for the same thing. Thankfully the team at Monzo were super helpful and prompt and so a panic was soon calmed.
Thanks for the help! I also recommend selecting the urgent box when reporting a problem that really worries you
Iām currently dealing with a duplicate transaction.
Iām not sure what Monzo advice is, but personally, I would recommend to keep your card permanently frozen, and unfreeze when you actually need to use it.
I have been there from May until August this year and I tried all the networks availableā¦ Fro any transaction you will be charged something between 7-10%ā¦ If I remember well the maximum you could get for transaction was 7000ARS.
Best way is to use TransferWise to send money to someone in Argentina, if you know somebody. They can get pesos for free at the ATM.
I could be worse know since the current situationā¦
Confirmed Monzo works at the higher MEP rate (blue dollar) with a refund process. It actually turned out to be a bit higher!
22/2/2023 Paid 1990 ARS at 8.60 GBP (231 ARS per GBP)
25/2/2023 Refunded 3.6 GBP, resulting in final rate of 398 ARS per GBP.
For comparison, I exchanged dollars in person here (Patagonia) at a rate of 345 ARS per USD (also offered 360 ARS per USD). Which would mean ~407 ARS per GBP.
Not everywhere takes card so still would recommend exchanging USD in the UK first. You can get that changed anywhere pretty easily at various businesses, not just currency exchanges.
