Monzo advertising on GB News website

Was just reading through an article on the GB News website and saw a Monzo advert?

What are people’s thoughts on this? I know the likes of Hope Not Hate have persuaded many others to drop their adverts on what many would describe as a divisive polarising channel.

Right wing people need bank accounts too. Or should Monzo only let people they agree with have a bank account?

I don’t think anything of it. I’m not going to start dictating what companies should be doing like that.

I don’t get these kind of campaigns.

Also… you were reading GB News. Arguably the best way to hit a website you don’t like is… to not use it. I’ve never once been on GB News.

You are absolutely right - I think Monzo should offer a bank account to Vladamir Putin, Kim Jon Un and many others as soon as they are able to. /s

In all seriousness, where brands advertise reflects on them. Does Monzo really want to be associated with GB News and the “Right Wing” crowd: if so, I can imagine their customer base rapidly disappearing (I suspect the majority of Monzo’s existing customer base are more “left wing” given Monzos prior support of trans and disabled people: the exact ones the “right wing” press demonise).

The ads looks like they come through https://www.taboola.com/ not a direct Monzo partnership.

Surely having the far right using monzo is a good thing, so monzo can keep an eye on them and make sure they aren’t doing anything wrong.

Could this be just a personalised Ad section, where GB News offer targetted Ad space to Ad agencies who then feed it with target ads, linked (more or less) to you personally? (aka - Monzo has paid an ad agency and the ad agency has bought ad space(s) to target visitors to all the websites in their portfolio, which have embedded targeted ad spaces)

That’s exactly where my thoughts went to as well. It’s typically how these types of campaigns are setup, to target those who already have shown interest in what you’re trying to promote.

Genuinely think it’s wild to think Monzo will rapidly drain because an advert is on GB News.

I’m assuming you’re now closing your account to get the ball rolling?

Banks should only care about sterling and stop caring about politics that aren’t related to their trading environment.

Depends on standards, no? To some people the majority of the country is right wing. The sensible option is for Monzo not to get dragged into it.

Not going to pretend that GB News is the pinnacle of news, but neither is any news provider.

Also what is the actual fear here?

It doesn’t affect anyone who someone else on the street banks with. If you don’t read GB News you won’t see the adverts. If you see the adverts then you’re reading GB News. If you feel strongly that companies shouldn’t associate with GB News then why are you reading GB News? You’re being more detrimental to your own cause than someone who couldn’t give a t*ss who banks with who but doesn’t read GB News.

Like truly; if your right wing neighbour banks with Monzo what the he*ck do you think is going to happen?

Please people, go outside and live life.

I’d find out we both bank with the same bank and I’d not care at all, because they’re not a bank with 200 customers built around being progressive.

This is the elephant in the room regarding the OP (not a personal reference)

I wrote, re-wrote and re-wrote again several replies about this, but @coffeemadman wrote it much better. Without getting personal, ad hominem, ad nauseum - why ask the question on personal opinions about this in the first place?

Should Monzo identify with a left-wing crowd then? Companies really shouldn’t be identifying with any political cause as that immediately sends a message to customers who support other parties that this is not the organisation for them.

It’s almost certainly just a targeted ad rather than Monzo specifically advertising on GB News, that’s not really how it works.
