Meet the next generation: Monzo for Under 16s 🎉

My daughter’s account elsewhere allowed the same thing, hence why, after reading what the Monzo one could and couldn’t do, we decided that she’d stay with the account elsewhere and not apply for a Monzo account that offered no improvement to her UX.

Hi,

I have just encouraged my 15 year old daughter to use Monzo instead of HSBC. Her Monzo is now linked to my Monzo.

the Monzo user experience and saving via pots is great. However there is a massive problem

She cannot send money to her mum or friends!! Or ANY other bank account, or even me.

I do not understand the logic behind that decision, afterall their allowed to spend a ludicrous 91k a year (250 a day) but can’t send £5 to their gran!!

I’m amazed that on the back of all the consumer research such a fundamental feature was not added.

I understand that you may not want a 6 year old sending money to friends, but I don’t have the same concern for a 15 year old

PLEASE ALLOW UNDER 16 ACCOUNT TO SEND MONEY TO WHOEVER THEY WANT.

Please let me know where these 5 other threads are? How do I find them ?

At the point of sign up It’s not clear what Monzo teen account could or could not do
It’s a great concept but feels too restrictive in it’s implementation.

I appreciate that different age groups might have to have different restrictions but that can easily be accommodated by the parent allowing features to be switched on or off

100% agree that Monzo implementation is unnecessarily restrictive compared to high street banks.

Can’t help but wonder where the product development team got their ideas from. Why on earth develop a product that’s more restrictive

Hi

I love the concept behind the under 16 account, but it’s severely lacking.

For example its obvious that a friend or another family member needs to be able to send money to the child.

Currently that’s not possible, !!

PLEASE ALLOW OTHERS TO BE ABLE TO SEND MONEY TO UNDER 16 ACCOUNT

There’s a search button in the top right.

Because what you want isn’t what everyone wants. Plenty of people don’t want their children to be able to send or recieve money for safety reasons.

So give parents the option.
In the same way they’ve given the parents the option to set spending limits

It was actively marketed as a teen account.
But it simply isn’t competitive and lacks features compared to other cards targeted to the same age group.

However if it was a primary school target market then I think it’s very good.

Helps it to be seen

Wouldn’t you be frustrated if you are actively targeted by monzo and encouraged to get a card for your child you then set the card up only to realize you cannot then receive payment from others or send payment to others.

When you compare monzo’s offering to the other competitors (particularly high street banks) is substandard.

I agree but that’s not how it’s marketed by Monzo

It’s not clear in The Terms and conditions that you can’t send and receive money to / from others.

I originally only created X2 posts under the “suggested features”

But another user highlighted this chat would be better. I simply reposted my 2 points

It’s not. It’s a child account.

13-15 is teens

And what is 6-12?

It is not marketed as a teen account. It’s a childs/kids account and that’s what it says everywhere.

You want it to do things it doesn’t do, spamming and shouting won’t change that. You’re best off back with whatever account you were using before.

If you did this comparison prior to applying then you should have known what the feature set is?

Instead, based on what you’ve said above, you assumed you could do this and are now upset with someone else?

If sending money is an important feature, it would have been wise to follow up and verify it could be done before switching from HSBC.

Monzo may add the ability to send money in the future, but it’s highly likely your child will be old enough to get a standard account by this point. These things take time and lots of testing before being released.
