🐎 Lloyds Banking Group Chat

They don’t need to pay out from the new Lloyds account to get the bonus. The last few times I’ve switched to a Lloyds account the bonus has been paid before the switch has even completed.

But Lloyds has a pretty unique definition of an active DD:

What is an Active direct debit

An active direct debit is one that has been paid to the originator in the last 13 months. This can be any frequency of payment: weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual. If the direct debit has been recently set up and the first payment has not been taken this is not an active direct debit.

Taken from here.

That definition relates to the direct debits transferred from the old bank to Lloyds, as part of the switch.

The question was whether the direct debits need to be paid from the new Lloyds account before they pay the switching bonus.

I read that, but a new direct debit wouldn’t have chance to have a payment so in a manner it will be included.

One that had been dormant for 14 months ie no payment or newly added, would be disregarded towards the switch.

Yes, that’s what I was going for.

I wanted to point out that it seems Lloyds are trying to {a wild plant growing where it is not wanted and in competition with cultivated plants}* out us chancers who would set up some small DDs (e.g. charity donations) purely for the switch money, so they will only pay the switch offer to people who already have genuine DDs on an account they want to switch.

Exactly, I think Lloyds are trying to be more strict about it, so if they stick to this rule, DDs that have just been set up with no payment being taken yet won’t count.

(*) what an utterly ridiculous censorship filter

I don’t believe Lloyds will be dismissing newly set up direct debits. Only those older than 13 months without payment.

They could, however, become more savvy by solely including certain direct debits, like utility bills (energy, broadband, water), council tax, water and mortgage payments.

Not charity payments, those 50p instant set up ones, etc.

Santander’s offer I believe only makes you eligible if it’s household direct debits.

Ok but the T&Cs of the offer don’t say anything like that anywhere.

What they do say is the DDs have to be ‘active’, and then they go on to define ‘active’ in the FAQ as a DD where the first payment has already been taken.

I am hoping you are right and I am wrong though!

Oh I’m quite sure they do mean to dismiss newly set up direct debits. What else can “recently set up” mean?

“If the direct debit has been recently set up and the first payment has not been taken this is not an active direct debit.”

They know that serial switchers will set up new direct debits just to get the switching bonus, and they’re trying to deter them.

This is an easy hoop to jump over. The tricky part is their modest 1-month window which means anyone doing a “chain switch” might miss the deadline.

I admittedly skipped by that bit so you could be right, I’m unable to test the theory but good for Lloyds if so.

Deter them is one thing, enforcing is another so be curious to watch the moans on Reddit :joy:

Great! Right after I transferred my spending money in there. :woman_facepalming:t2:

Strange, my Lloyds is on dark mode but the error is showing in light theme.

I’m glad I just moved mine into iFast this morning to give the bank a test run
