Launching new side project to find startup names - need your support

Before this thread gets thrown into the holy dumpster-fire of Discord, perhaps some balance.

I think this as a proposition is poorly explained. There is some value to it, but I just don’t think it’s been explained at all well. And I agree that on face value, the idea of someone bulk buying domains just to resell them with significant markup looks, and is, poor. Almost nefarious.

But, reading around the lines, what’s not being considered is the cost of the additional value, things such as the research around that name and how useful it is, ensuring it is trademarked and also optimised properly are all things you can’t necessarily get from places such as GoDaddy etc.

Basically, it’s the people and the work they do in the background before and after the sale that I don’t think has been accounted for properly. If you’re a startup such as Mondo, and you spend significant money you don’t really have on marketing just to re-brand, when people already know the name, it can be game ending.

Some of the names have clearly had some very poor research considering the things they sound extremely similar to.

Urgh - I read the initial line which inferred they did!

Just for complete clarity, I’m not trying to defend the idea - I think it’s poor.

But also adds slightly more value than it says it does on the tin

Neither Tom or Jonas work at Monzo anymore and haven’t done for a fair while. And I think Tom is just promoting it.

Earlier on the only one that had sold was Garple  but I can’t believe they’ve sold so many! Fools and their money etc etc.

Maybe they bought Garple so noone would get mixed up?!
Edit, wait, they ARE Garple.

I think I’ve confused myself (and you guys now)

I took it that they listed Garple (their website) and marked it as sold, so that they had one that was sold.

Watching with interest. There’s a lot of frustration here today so I’ll keep it quiet.

You also don’t need to sell it at $600 list price, just to ensure it’s sold…

137 Domains on their list.

If you buy all of them through Gandi.com (others are available) - that’s £1,389.18 start up costs.

Only need to sell 6 at the $300 price and you’ve made your money back!

Edit: Plus $20 ChatGPT subscription

You could use it for flogging, no idea what though.

This is one of the most scummy things i’ve ever heard of. It’s just domain squatting on steroids.

There must be a domain registrar that gives you a commission %

Get AI to give you 5000 names for domains that are available, let people sort by letter, length etc. They click through and you get 10%

Very low start up costs and have it live by the weekend.

Who bought up flar.se? My Flarse app will never make it in Sweden now.
