Weirdly, Lounge access came with Premium in 2020. When the Perks/Extra/Max plan tiers first launched this year, it was dropped from those plans. There must have been a heck of a kickback because it was re-introduced to Max (without a massive fanfair) a few months later. And it still doesnāt show on the plan comparison table at the bottom of this webpage: Monzo Plans | Our Take on Packaged Bank Accounts
Not quite - someone over 7 can enter into a contract - itās just they are generally voidable (Iām talking generic contract law here rather than specifically about banking).
I am 16 and I have other bank accounts for my monthly outgoings (rent, subscriptions, etc), and another account for travel as on multiple occasions my bus company has taken money whilst I havenāt even used it.
In my situation, the subscription would be a massive help as iād be able to close other accounts as I could use virtual cards (for the bus etc), and the spending from a pot (for my outgoings).
A lot of people seem to think u18s donāt have a real financial life but I actually work 25hrs a week, pay rent, and have a monthly rolling phone service (which is apparently legal?).
Are the subscriptions Monzo offer contracts? Otherwise thereās no real reason they couldnāt offer a revised 16-17 version without the credit and o18 perks. Itās a bit controversial of their quote when signing up for a 16-17 something like: āThe same as a normal account, we just block merchants for over 18sā
I understand where everyone is coming from though. I didnāt mean for my question to start arguments haha, just a guy who wants more from their bank!
EDIT: just seen that you also get fee-free cash deposits too! that would help me as i get tips from work. Annoying when I have to deposit in my nationwide to transfer over to monzo as id reached my limit for deposits in that month or whatever
5hrs on some days, 10hr Weekends, etc.
Iād like to add that youāre financially responsible for yourself at 16⦠are we sure that you canāt sign up for subscriptions? I was living alone for a while which was out of my control and I was effectively an actual adult. Life would have been undoable if this was the case! I was given housing benefits so I could house myself, I paid for gas and electric (with the help of my council rep). I live with my family again now.
My point is, at 16 - life can be the same as someone who is 25 (just without any lending).
A pay and go service includes bundles (smarty, giffgaff, whatever) paid monthly, itās not a contract in any form, just pre paid.
Stop paying? Your services stop.
With financial products including monzo extra/perks/max, they can force you into an unarranged overdraft for these - not very responsible of them to do so.
I get it, it sucks for those who are financially responsible, but the law isnāt really going to change over a small few.
Could Monzo just do a similar revised version where services stop if not paid?
Completely get why theyād have to be cautious, I know someone my age that got a mobile contract from EE for the new iphone 15 under his parents name, didnāt pay it - and then had bailiff letters flying through the door. Most 16-17s canāt be trusted, I get that.
@Carlo1460 sorry I donāt know how to quote haha.
Itās probably a can of worms they arenāt interested in opening.
Such a shame though, would really help a few out.
Completely get it though. Guess iāll keep on using my multiple bank accounts.
The law also has to work for people like this
Iāve just looked at my credit file for the first time since upgrading from Extra to Perks.
This was already available in Extra so it was a bit annoying having to go through the ānew feature flowā before I was able to access it.
Just be careful youāre not breaching U18 laws on hours worked, if this is term time. Maximum of 2 hours on school days, 8 hours on Saturdays, and 2 hours on Sundays.
It differs during holidays but still only 2 hours on a Sunday. Which seems very low, but there we are.
Ignore above, poster is post-16 leaving age
Thatās for school-age children. 16-18 year olds (i.e. college/sixth form age) can most definitely work a full shift on Sundays - as a trip to any supermarket on a Sunday will confirm.
(The definition is linked to the academic year I believe - so a 16 year old born in Sept-June has to wait until after theyāve finished their exams while a 16 year old born in July or August will become eligible as soon as they hit their 16th birthday.)
Yeah, as long as your school leaving age no one cares.
I never looked into it as iām pretty sure it would be the employer that would be legally challenged.
I did think it was odd. Funny enough it doesnāt actually specify this⦠I would hope the actual law does!
I mean when I was 16 and still in school I absolutely worked 8 hours on a Sunday soā¦
Oh well. Woolworths probably canāt be sued now.
Some councils are more hot on these issues than others. But yes the individual has nothing to fear so long as they havenāt misrepresented themselves, itād be the employer who would get in trouble.
This was when I resubscribed - but Iām now tempted to upgrade to Upper Class to Nashville, so Iāll not even get to use the discounted lounge accessā¦
Must book a holiday in the sun before Nashville
Hi all, I upgraded to perks a couple of days ago, received my new card. I havenāt activated it. I would like to keep using my original (free account) coral card can I do that?
Yes you can. Itāll nudge you to activate but you can ignore it.
You didnāt have to order the new card at all btw.
