If you haven't moved over, what's stopping you from making Monzo your main bank?

Monzo gave details on their lending criteria today if you’re interested in reading it? For example, you might have a perfect score but if you have a default on your account - it’s a no :-1:

Club Lloyds benefits is the main thing and the fact that they waive the membership fee if you pay a certain amount in every month

I’m with them as well (club Lloyd’s). I only keep them because of the free movie tickets :man_shrugging:t2: Doesn’t mean I’m not full monzo though :ok_hand:t2:

I’ll have a look at that then.

Never ever had any defaults in all my life, so it’s not that.

All 3 CRAs tell me that my “score” is higher than the average in my area and the UK, but then again they’re totally meaningless - it’s your record past and present that really matters.

Interesting that I have never had any problems getting a credit card, loan or mortgage when I wanted or needed to in all my 44 years of being an adult. Same for “Mrs. Necessiter”.

My bank has trusted me/us for 32 years with a 1k overdraft limit (which I have used maybe a handful of times, almost always accidentally) so it’s become a sort of comfort blanket in my financial armoury.

Sadly a chink of armour that Monzo cannot give me! Mrs. N has got a £50 limit by virtue of being a token for being an investor when they first offered overdrafts.

But hey-ho as I said earlier my bank is suddenly looking to be “more Monzo” so I’m more mindful to stay with them now and less mindful to “go full Monzo”. The idea of going “full Monzo” is now slipping away for me/us ever faster and faster…

Basically 3 things - 1. My salary account has a good linked regular saver and requires my full salary amount paid in each month. 2. I want to keep another account as my main so I can switch it to get switching bonuses withou ever having to lose my monzo and 3. It actually makes managing my money easier to have long term direct debits coming out elsewhere and to transfer over just my spending money to monzo every month and manage it there. Also if there are salary fluctuations with pay rises etc and bonuses, the amount that I can spend doesn’t change.

I do have an account but I’ve not switched fully for a few reasons:

  • From reading the odd topic now and again it still seems like the way Monzo do things and the way the entire rest of the banking/payment industry do things don’t always play nicely. I’d rather avoid that to be honest…

  • Sorry to say this but parts of the community feel utterly toxic, showing the kind of behaviour I’d expect to see in some of the more hardcore apple-lover forums. Lost count of the number of times I’ve seen people being berated/chastised because they are doing things the non-Monzo way, rather than the true way that should have been immediately obvious and are therefore stupid.

  • My “legacy” bank have been doing lots of user research for new features recently and I want to see how that all turns out first.

Two reasons why I still have a Santander account: (granted it’s a student account so I get 1|2|3 for free)

  1. I get very good interest rates with Santander. The past two years were 5% but it’s now 3% which is still better than a lot of easy access savings accounts (which is basically what I’m using it as and it stores all my money except everyday spending).

  2. I get cash every now and again and I have a Santander ATM and post office close by (closer than a paypoint) where I can deposit cash for free and then transfer if I need to.

I also think it’s useful to have more than one account as it makes me feel more secure. For example, if for whatever reason there’s an issue with one of my accounts and I can’t pay for something, I have a backup option.

The main thing I wish Monzo offered was interest rates. I don’t mean Monzo Plus though as you get less maximum interest than the cost of the subscription fees and I wouldn’t use any of the offers as none are relevant to me. It’s not a huge deal for me as, like I said, I’m fortunate enough to have a good rate with Santander while I’m a student. The issue comes when I graduate and I lose that rate.

Bills in a pot that bills automatically come out off

For me it’s the account switch itself will close our previous account which I’d like to keep open for now. That’s the only thing. I do know I can do that manually but I estimate it’ll take 5 hours. No thanks.

For me:

1 - Paypoint fiasco, I don’t deposit cash that much but with my legacy bank, I can go into a branch and use instant deposit machine hassle free and transfer to Monzo.

2 - I have a long good history with legacy bank which reports to all CRAs which I feel will help more in the future with borrowing/mortgage.

3 - Legacy bank provides me with a £3k overdraft and £2k credit card, both not really in use but nice to have, Monzo won’t provide overdraft to me for some reason (maybe due to not having salary paid in).

4 - I like having a separate account for CC repayments, phone contract, Experian and other long term recurring payments. I use my legacy as a kind of hub for salary and personal commitments with standing orders to joint account for bills and to personal account for monthly day to day spending. Works for me.

Do you really think it would take 5 hours?

Surely you could just slowly move over to Monzo?

Honestly, I’m just too lazy to make Monzo my main account :joy: plus I quite like my main bank as well where my wages go into, plus I’ve got direct debits set up on my main bank so it’s just a lot less hassle to keep that as a main account and transfer money into my Monzo account when needed.

You can use CASS and that is all done automatically plus Monzo give you £50 I believe for switching

When have Monzo ever given anybody £50 for switching?

I’ve seen it in a small number of experiments, definitely not widespread though.

Exactly the situation I’m in. There is absolutely no compelling reason to switch.

What would make you switch m

I can’t think of anything Monzo would do to make me switch, to be honest.

By having my salary and bills with Santander, I make about £30 pm in cashback and interest. If Santander annoy me enough (and I have zero contact with them, so it’s unlikely), I might consider another mainstream bank.

£35 in cash back and interest then, or would it need to be a lot more  ? not that that is going to happen any time soon with Monzo.
Presumably for most users inertia more than anything else - or with ‘all’ the switching bonuses around that have been offered do people just switch to get the bonus then leave the bank they have switched to for the next ‘fix’ ?
I’ve been with Lloyds for getting on for 30 years , since Monzo I don’t think Ive got my Lloyds debit card out to pay for anything for over a year. I still want their facilities like a branch , cheque / cash paying in, Visa card as a secondary convenience, and there is nothing at the moment stopping me having more than one current account with the varying services on offer.

And to get over the inertia people need a push, or a pull.

A push would be when their current bank lets them down in some way, a pull is when a competitor bank has a compelling enough offer.

I’m happy enough with Santander, and happy to use Monzo as my spending account. At the moment. :+1:
