but any ID should really be a photo ID as otherwise it could be anyone using it. Impersonation is a real risk in financial services.
Of course, hence why you can also use a driving licence to open an account.
However, a government agency or civil service ID card (which will be a photo ID) should also be acknowledged as acceptable, as should things like an accredited press card, police warrant card or emergency services ID, or any photo-based ID card or pass that has been vetted by an independent third party. Sadly, that’s still not enough to cover everyone, but it would widen the options a bit, while still ensuring that any ID option includes a photo.
I do wish we had pushed ahead with the national ID card scheme. The government of the day really did bottle that one very quickly.
Anyhow these days most employers and recruitment agencies will demand photo ID and take a copy of your passport. Some of those agencies will refuse to deal with you if you do not have a passport.
Such agencies need proof that you have a legal right to work in the country. A passport is the easiest way of achieving this, but there are other acceptable ways of proving your right to work in the UK or mainland Europe, it’s just a faff. to do which is why some recruiters can’t be bothered. If you don’t make the effort to make it easy for them, they won’t make the effort to help you etc.
I’m surprised that acceptance hasn’t been mentioned more than a couple of times. Surely this is way more important than Apple Pay?
Unfortunately, I can’t use Monzo as my Primary Account because of this (and other issues). I can’t pay my Barclaycard, Tesco Bank CC and I know if I need fuel late in the day I can’t fill up at Morissons (I know this is being fixed but you get the idea) which is my local filling station.
I’m scared of risking something bad on my credit rating for late payment for my other DDs to the point where I don’t want to risk the chance of my car payment not going through. This week I used my legacy bank details for a payment from Mazuma Mobile for my old Samsung Galaxy S8+ because they explicitly state that under no circumstances would they re-attempt or change a Faster Payment should it fail for any reason and I just simply couldn’t risk losing £360 incase whatever system they used didn’t recognise Monzo’s Sort Code.
I’m sure it will get (and is getting) better, but right now this is a major issue, above all of the other ‘nice to haves’ like connected accounts, Apple Pay, etc etc.
The backlash was to the massive database behind the ID cards that would collect, store, and make accessible to a wide range of people loads of personal details.
The government of the day should have stuck with a simple ID document and they would likely have been able to introduce it. Hiding an intrusive database collecting details of citizens was rightfully resisted.
I had one of those ID cards, and personally I think the database was ultimately of as much benefit to the citizen as the Government.
Instead of one central database where we can update our address and check our information, there are dozens of Government databases and some may have our current address and others an old one, some may have correct info about us but others contain errors. We don’t know what is held where or how to check it. With the National ID card as a cardholder I knew exactly where that info was held and how to check it
It’s entirely subjective, isn’t it? The issue with acceptance is only an issue if you’re with one of the (few) companies who still haven’t updated their sort code database. This is out of Monzo’s hands really - they can ask companies to speed things up, but can’t force them to. For most users, this isn’t an issue. Whereas everyone on iOS is unable to use Apple Pay (and this is presumably in Monzo & Apple’s hands).
Can you get in touch with us in-app when you get the chance? It’d be great if we could get a bit more information on any acceptance issues you’ve had here.
Hi @ilyon - I think it’s because Costco doesn’t accept Credit Cards, only Debt and Amex. I always assumed Costco sees the Monzo card as mastercard and thus a credit card.
Anyways, I’ll try again next time and then if it doesn’t work now I have a CA, and let in-app support know.
Costco take Monzo current account cards since at least November some time (it’s possible it doesn’t work with the prepaid card?). If you have a current account debit card, don’t let them put you off, it definitely works.
