Huel, Saturo, yfood etc

So I’ve tried YFood for the last week and I’m not that big a fan.

Main issue is the consistency at the recommended dosage. At 90g with 300ml of water it’s not too bad in terms of consistency and texture but it’s just a tiny portion!

I mix the same volume of Huel with 700ml of water and end up with a shake that’s thicker, has better texture and is ultimately just a lot more filling.

I can drink my Huel for 2-3 hours and feel full whereas the YFood takes me about 5 mins to drink and I’m hungry again much sooner.

I do quite like the taste (I’ve had hazelnut and coconut so far) but ultimately I can’t see myself sticking with it, especially as the Huel works out far cheaper too.

I know it’s all personal preference but I’m a bit disappointed and was hoping to have a a more viable alternate option for me.

just to avoid scrolling up through 500 posts, how come Huel didn’t work out for you?

Oh, well hmm they wanted an alternative option so I assumed they didn’t

It’s nice to have alternate options just for variety.

Just the change in flavours is nice.

yeah that I understand. The chocolate yFood is great imo (but then again so is the coconut!). I do use all the flavour powders with the huel, but even the better mixes (banana and peanut butter!) still taste like flavours of huel.

I definitely agree that YFuel is thinner and less filling though.

I personally like the taste of my Huel (Coffee flavour with a double espresso shot) just as much as the YFood, so for me it really is the thicker texture and greater quantity that’s accounting for feeling more full.

I do blend my Huel in my Vitamix and refrigerate overnight. I tried just shaking in the bottle and instantly consuming and I didn’t enjoy it at all. I’m doing the same with the YFood too.

I think the refrigerating in particular does a lot to improve (thicken) the texture.

I think it’s the amount of artificial sweetness that affects my hunger. Yfood is much sweeter than huel, and it feels the same as when I have a Diet Coke, that always makes me really hungry.

Still the main reason I prefer huel is that’s it’s vegan, more sustainable, and contains things like kambucha and pea protein which I think are likely great ingredients for health.

Just had my first Huel after getting through my three packs of Yfood…. And I hated it!!!

Damn Yfood was so sweet it’s messed up my tastebuds.

What to do???

Huel is pretty bad IMO unless you put a lot of extra flavours into it, fruit etc. Milk helps to tone down the bitterness (don’t need much)… the porridge consistency though I could never get over.

Yfood is as you say quite sweet… Saturo is similar. Nothing I’ve found in the middle.

I’m also not liking the texture any more, and had no issue with it before.

I’m in a real quandary now!

I started on yFood but I immediately preferred Huel. Then again I don’t have a sweet tooth at all.

I switched to Huel Black and that’s definitely harder though. Doesn’t matter the flavour, it tastes of dried pea. I might settle back on Huel white.

Wow, this thread is almost 4 years old. I consider that a success :raised_hands:

I’ve recently switched to Abnormal, who are a new player in the market. What’s cool about them is that you fill in a questionnaire upon signup, and then the powder you get is modified depending on your answers to meet your specific requirements. If anyone wants a referral code, let me know. I’m enjoying it a lot so far. The packaging is also plastic free, and each meal is individually packeted (in paper) so no need to measure it out from a larger bag.

They also do a free 7 day trial, you just pay a few quid for shipping.

How you finding it compared to Yfood or Huel? Terms of texture, sweetness etc?

Abnormal powder is better than Huel on taste and texture IMO. It’s been a while since I had Saturo powder (when I buy Saturo it’s usually RTD) but from memory I’d say it’s neck and neck.

Possibly because of the configuration tailored for me when I answered the questionnaire but I also find the satiety levels to last me a little longer than other brands too, although your mileage may vary depending on what kind of configuration you get. And I think that’s really the “killer feature” of it.

Haven’t had YFood so can’t say on that one!

@simonb I checked out Abnormal but when I made my “custom powder” it didn’t give me the nutritional breakdown. It says “high in protein” – but how high? My Huel shake is 80 grams which helps a lot with hitting my macros

Pretty sure you get the exact breakdown with the order but I’ll check later.

Have to say that i’m incredibly annoyed and disappointed with Abnormal. Having tried YFood and Huel(I don’t like either) I thought I’d try abnormal after i saw @simonb post the other day.

I have coeliac disease which means I can’t eat gluten, at all. They assured me they’re completely gluten free and 100% safe for me, fast forward to the box arriving today, says gluten free, then in the small print at the bottom, made in a factory that handles gluten, cannot guarantee it’s gluten free.

You cannot use the terms “Gluten Free” and “Made in a factory that handles Gluten” together, it’s just not on at all. they should say it’s got “No gluten containing ingredients” If you cannot guarantee it’s gluten free then it’s not gluten free.

A brand that’s built around health drinks should know better, now a waste of time and money regardless of the small amount a trial box is. As well as that, they’re running the risk of making some people incredibly ill.

That’s terrible :grimacing:. Totally irresponsible. Do they not know about coeliacs or something?

I have 0 idea, however, i have emailed them so will be interesting to see the response

Oh dear, that’s really not good. Hope they are able to swiftly remedy this. Was it just the trial, so you only paid for postage?
