Debit card notifications started working again for me today. Hopefully they’ve fixed whatever the issue was.
what exactly is this for? Debit/credit cards? Business cards? Somewhere to keep photos of Midland branches before HSBC bought them?
You’re so young
Every bank used to give these things out, in which to keep your cheque/cash/Switch.
All the free stationary is how I got addicted to collecting ‘banking sh*t’
Yes, its a card holder.
In the good old days, banks used to provide branded holders for things like cards, cheques and statements.
Yet Monzo can’t even sell us Hot Chip merch
I don’t think many banks do now. When I first opened a bank account it was with HSBC and a solo card/cheque book. They came into our school and helped us open one.
My mum used to work for NatWest and somewhere had all the pigs. If you know what they are you’re as old as me!
These days a nice card opening package and packaged account benefits are more their (any banks) style.
And in my student days, I used to pay my monthly rent (of, ahem, £160) by cheque from a chequebook housed in the grey cover as it was pre–LloydsTSB era.
When did online banking start to become a thing? Aside from a Nationwide savings book made when I was tiny every account I’ve had came with a website and app.
I used HSBC online banking in the early 2000’s
In fact, I had a Cahoot account in 1998 which was online only.
EDIT: and a First Direct account in 1997 which had fully-functional online banking - albeit primitive.
Looks like HSBC had it from at least 2000 ooo https://web.archive.org/web/20001018073517/
I had Windows XP when it was new, and there was an MS programme (MS Money?)which linked to my Barclays account. I’m not sure whether it really counted as online banking as it might have been read only (it was back when cheques were used for virtually all “transfers.”)
I used similar from 2001 onward. Before then, I used Quicken Personal from 1997, which could connect to compatible bank accounts to download statements and reconcile the ‘online’ transactions with manually entered or repeating transactions automatically.
aww Microsoft Money was discontinued in 2009, would be great in the current Open Banking era
First Direct used to send you a real leather, not plastic, card wallet and cheque book holder. I still have mine.
billion dollar app idea: leather debit card
Must say I was somewhat (pleasantly) surprised when I logged in earlier to see this. Super nice.
I can’t think of one other bank that does this (I sort of think Monzo does but I can’t remember)
The first direct app should have one too Happy birthday!
Thank you
I won’t lie it’s the first thing I went to check and sure enough it did.
happy birthday!!
Happy Birthday!
No ?
