How do you justify paying for Monzo Plus?

Hopefully it drives more innovation and new features as competitors raise their game, meaning Monzo has to carry on developing new stuff for Plus (and moving old stuff into the standard product).

If you’re up for a long haul thread about Password Managers - buckle up

I’ve used 1Password for as long as I can remember. It’s a fantastic product that integrates extremely well with the Apple ecosystem in particular. I also like how open the company are about security and development.

LastPast just never sat well with me, and have had a few breaches over the years which completely rules them out for me. But there are other good options, and I’d recommend trying a few to see what works best for you.

Quick question on the transaction data into sheets. Is this new?

I’ve been using IFTTT to export all transactions for the past 2 years. Is there a difference here?

The auto export of data includes all of the transaction information including notes, categories and is kept up to date in real time. So if you update a category for an old transaction the update is reflected in the data immediately. It also includes all historic transactions.

The data is the same as if you were to use the manual export as CSV option in the summary screen.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this. Went down the rabbit hole, watched some YouTube reviews and now on a trial of 1password :joy:

Some great features.

Currently I don’t - I got a voucher for being a failed plustomer, so I’m using that to “trial” it

Initial impressions are that it’s good, but I’m on the fence around it being value for money, I think keeping it will depend on two things;

  • What new features are announced
  • How useful I’ve found custom categories and seeing accounts in one place

Given that a number of features available at a cost in Plus are available for free in my legacy bank, I’m not paying £5 just to “support” Monzo and have a few (cool, just not useful to me) features as a result.

honestly if they just put dark mode as a plus feature i would be sold. Im already going to support monzo with the £5 a month. I do wish they would do what natwest / lloyds / barclays do with the whole active direct debits + minimum monthly deposit = cash usually enough to cover the premium fees. not sure how the big banks make that work but a few seem to do it with their paid accounts

Ah, I’m so sorry! Let me go build this for you…

any chance in the future of building some lovely “standard” templates to better understand peoples spending / budgets for the non technical users ?

I believe the Coral Crew get to vote on price per person. At least I think that’s what I heard.

Jokes. It’s actually £6/month.

I’d pay £5 for this in a heartbeat, if they supported joint accounts and I could add my Amex.

The idea of seeing all transactions from my Amex in the same place, budgeted, categorised etc. is incredibly appealing and any other aggregator I’ve used in the past has been janky as all hell.

I very rarely use my debit card (only where Amex isn’t accepted) but I’d gladly pay for this if I could actually use it.

Okay firstly this is why I jumped on the “banwagon”…

It’s £5 per month cheaper than my last plus subscription… And without Monzo Bank would you be happy on Lloyds TSB or whatever bank? Because if Monzo doesn’t make money how else can they pay their staff to do the hard code work behind Monzo? The people who help us on live chat?

Money doesn’t grow from fresh air they need income!

Monzo is a bank, not a charity. You really shouldn’t be making the decision of buying an optional service from a for-profit company purely to be “supporting” them. They also get revenue from interest on balances (for non-Plus accounts) as well as interchange fees so it’s not like they get zero money. Whether it’s enough to fund their operations is another matter but that’s not for us (customers) to decide, and realistically speaking I don’t think the revenue from Plus subscriptions is going to be enough to make them long-term profitable anyway (it’s terrible value for money so I can’t see enough people signing up when you can get much better value elsewhere or get similar features for free).

The people who help us on live chat?

Monzo has done significant work to try and make it as difficult as possible for people to access the live chat and as far as I know Plus doesn’t give you any kind of priority support either. There are reasons why they are doing so (although I still think it’s disgusting for a bank to intentionally make it hard for their customers to reach out) but ultimately it’s a hole they dug themselves into and you shouldn’t subscribe just because you feel sorry for them and want to help out - again they are a bank not a charity, and a bank that raised millions of funding and unfortunately appears to have burnt a large chunk of it without coming up with a solid path to profitability.

without Monzo Bank would you be happy on Lloyds TSB or whatever bank?

There is plenty of competition out there that provide the same (or even better) services than Monzo and even the legacy banks are catching up.

You should subscribe to Plus if you think the service is useful to you (and better than the competition in whatever metric you have, whether it’s purely value for money or the advantage of having everything in a single app), not because your bank appears to be terrible at making profits and you feel sorry for them (because in this case 5£/month isn’t gonna help).

An example of how firms can use the anonymous aggregated data that Money Dashboard provide is at:

I find this perfectly harmless and in fact beneficial - it’s the London Business School and the Bank of England working out how regional spending patterns have changed as a result of Covid/the lockdown

Ever needed to use the live chat?

I signed up for Plus mainly for the following reasons :

1- Virtual Cards

2- Custom Categories

3- Auto-Export Transactions.

4- Other Accounts in Monzo – Monzo has the best implementation of this I have seen.

5- Offers - I will actually make usage of some of the products.

And the Card is an added bonus! It looks stunning in person and £5 a month for all the features are really worth it as they will help me to budget a lot better.

No - Monzo are a bank not a company or charity. So while I support paying some money towards features that I find useful, I don’t support paying money to cover the cost of development.

Honestly, yes. While I love the Monzo UI and I would miss instant transaction notifications, a good number of the paid for plus features are offered FOR FREE by my legacy bank. They also have better savings rates, faster customer support and I’m happy with what they offer.

I stay with Monzo because I like the UI, I find the features useful but this doesn’t mean I have some kind of particular loyalty or “they can do no wrong” mentality about it
