I think overtime everyone will be used to it
. Google definitely wonāt be reversing their re-branding anytime soon
I can imagine the court case.
Google v Monzo?
It would take some very special shiny-suited Monzo lawyer to get that one over the line.
(I read somewhere anyway, that the products need to be similar for a dispute to be raised.)
In all honesty, I donāt think its something Monzo would even consider as a Brand being about the future and transparency. Plus if Monzo were not happy about it they would of done something a while ago when the rebrand was announced, Iām not sure my opinion only this one.
Thatās an interesting point. I think its a good idea too as otherwise there would be limitations on logos and stuff all over the internet
Exactly, need to be in the same category of product/service. Itās how you can Cadbury, or McDonalds trademarking the colour purple/red, but only in relation to Chocolate, fast food, etc.
I do wonder if the ācategoryā of āapps / digital servicesā would be close enough, and if Googleās prior use of the 4 colours (albeit different hues to Monzoās use) would be enough.
Or, tinfoil hat theory: Google buy Monzo! Google Bank
Iām sure youāre right. Money best spent elsewhere ![]()
Monzo have trademarked the name/logo in several classes (in the UK, not sure about US/EU) - Iām sure there would be an overlap in āsoftwareā classes somewhere. But that would probably be all it is - an overlap rather than a service copy.
The new Gmail notification looks more like the Monese one.
On trademarks though, Iāve never worked out how Aldi & Lidl get away with blatantly ripping off a load of products. Half the time their copies are right next to the originals in the store!!
Waited all day for a payment to pop up in monzo for a comparison, thereās enough difference there to not confuse anyone once you realise the icons have changed for Gmail

Thereās been a few instances where theyāve have to adjust the packaging but in the round itās full on allowed as theyāre not infringing on a trade mark even though products sound similar and they donāt fully copy the competitors packaging either. Iām sure thereās been a few challenged etc etc but theyāve been dismissed
I remember once being absolutely furious because I couldnāt find the Chromecast app on my phone, and it took an agitated Google search before I discovered that it was now the second from right icon.
That was a few years ago now. Iām still furious and have an intense dislike of the icon, even though I can no longer remember what the once clearly distinct Chromecast icon used to be
Weirdly though, I donāt have any trouble with the new Gmail icon; itās much wider than it is tall, and I can still see the envelope skeuomorphism through it, so Iāve (not yet) mistaken it for a Monzo notification.
Iād also imagine that by this point there isnāt any confusion between the brands. People buying them know they arenāt the real brand.
Iām not confused between Monzo and Mail. But I hate the new Google icons.
That is all.
So much angerā¦![]()
It sure shows that branding matters.
I was momentarily intemperate. Hate was probably a strong word. Mildly unkeen might have been a better phrase.
With your permission, Iām going to use that phrase as often as I reasonably canā¦![]()
Inbox was naff, end of story
Inbox was the best email client/service ever.
Donāt you just love a good old concensus ![]()
(Of course, in reality Outlook Express was the business
).
I think Iāve worked out the reason I donāt find the Monzo M and Gmail M confusing - Iāve had one of the old Plus icons for as long as it was a thing, and thatās a single solid colour.
I really donāt like the GSuite set of icons though. What were they thinking! What is Docs supposed to be? Slightly Long Calendar? Whatās the Calendar with a Triangle on it?!?
So much rage inside.
