Giving the community more trust

The one night I leave my :computer: off, I miss all the fun! Thanks everyone for the thoughts - I’m going to do my best to digest it all later today and reply to particular points!

Keep them coming though!!

This is a fine idea. Two caveats. First, structure the earning process so that it doesn’t deteriorate into a race to get chosen. This will help avoid the risk of attracting those who’s reasons are not so inclusive (though there unlikely to be many Monzo users this would apply to!)
Secondly, monitor the moderators.

I think this super important to bear in mind, especially when it comes to me and Zainab setting guidelines for those who have level 4 rights.

I don’t necessarily think the forum needs to be super neat and tidy, to manage things too rigidly could stifle the type of discussions and interactions I really enjoy seeing on the forum. On the other hand I think it could really support long standing but ever changing conversation topics. I completely agree with the below for example

Overall I agree with giving some users more trust, working out how we can do this fairly and democratically i something we would need to figure out if we go ahead with this. The responses in this thread will no doubt shape how we approach the next steps if we go ahead :slightly_smiling_face:

Totally agree with Tony - touch as little as possible but support users with common answers and remove anything inappropriate.

That is what is already being done Ross, it is a matter of what else needs to be done (such as closing or merging threads) as community membership increases

I think that very active users/contributors etc could be approached, in addition to a nomination process. Then a bit of “training” to ensure thinking consistent with Monzo and current practice. Then a way for users to raise any legitimate concerns over moderation by one of these new people (over-merging e.g.). Lightens the load for Monzo team and gains involvement from the community. :grinning:

I’m not sure that selection of the moderators should be democratic. It’s Monzo’s forum, and I think you are best placed to choose who you want to moderate. That would also avoid people trying to game the system just to become a moderator. In the same way, Monzo is very open to our ideas/suggestions for the product, but ultimately it’s not a democratic decision – you decide what to build and when based on a whole variety of factors.

There definitely would need to be a procedure for someone to raise concerns if they felt they were being unfairly targeted by a moderator, but I think through @anon60781621, @anon38211169, and other :monzo: staff’s engagement with the forum, you will have a good idea of who should be approached to moderate.

Hey Everyone!

Thank you for sharing your feedback and thoughts! :raised_hands:

In terms of next steps, I spoke to @anon38211169 + @anon50039658, and we have a few thoughts:

  • Choosing Members
We definitely don’t think this should be a popularity thing. I think it’s fair to say that we’re getting to know many of you a bit more and so we feel comfortable choosing who to approach along with the self-nomination option. It would be great to have recommendations for other community members, you think may have been exceptional.

  • Moderators
We’re not keen on this as a title - is there another you’d feel more comfortable with? I’d prefer no title but it can be handy in occasions where this group of people need to be flagged.

  • As little as possible…
We agree that the forum doesn’t need to be overtly polished up. We appreciate more of a helping hand with the time -sensitive and security-sensitive issues - situations that are illegal, offensive and go against the code of conduct. The other thing we’re happy to test out is merging of threads. However, any editing, pinning or interventions will be only for Monzo team.

The first few people we’ll be giving this access to is: @HoddzDJ @alexs @RichardR
Will drop you guys a message later today!

This is always going to be an ongoing thing - we’ll see what works and what doesn’t. If we need to set up more processes and some sort of training, we can work on that too. This is just a start.

Thanks for choising me, happy to accept :raised_hands: and hello @RichardR and @alexs.

As for titles, I have no input here as my brain is totally fried. Happy to go with whatever.
