🇬🇭 Monzo in Ghana

Ghana has loads of ATM’s and many hotels accept card payments.
No problems at all encountered using a Monzo card. In fact if you can pay for goods by card - do so and save on drawing out cash from a machine.

There is some info here for Ghana from an old thread but perhaps better to have new Ghana only thread.

Just back from Ghana. We spent time in Accra and Cape Coast.

I was surprised by how many restaurants and major stores accepted cards. Pretty much all of my big spends went on Monzo so I didn’t need much cash.  Pay works too in most places, although many staff aren’t used to that form of payment - especially with the watch.

For everything else, you will need some cash. I was charged 25.99 GHS (about £1.25) by the ATM I used in Accra Mall to take out 2000 GHS (about £100), which in hindsight was quite a bit, but ultimately fine as a one-off.

You’ll need cash for tips, markets, and also to hand to the baggage handlers at the airport so that they actually retrieve your delayed baggage for you in a timely fashion (but that’s another story for another day).

Uber and Bolt are both present, but you’ll struggle to find drivers willing to accept card payments. Set your app to pay cash and you’ll have a much better time. The rides are dirt cheap though. Going all the way across town in an Uber comfort and being in the car for an hour will only set you back about 80 GHS (£4) - Imagine the cost of a similar journey in the UK! Don’t forget to tip your drivers too.
