What if you unlock your app, someone snatches your phone and boom all your money is stolen?
That on you or monzo?
It’s on you

Perfectly fine with that. I’m an adult, I should have a choice.
Monzo isn’t, and that’s their job to make sure loss doesn’t happen both sides especially with the new 50/50 blame factors.
I think most banks work the same.
I already feel adequately protected with the added security features of daily bank transfer limits that I can set myself, known location for transfers of a certain value and secret QR codes. I don’t need Face ID upon launching the app as well.
If I’m going to be forced into Face ID then I’m going to disable the rest of the added security.
That’s your choice but given that people have had their PIN numbers compromised by people looking over their shoulder, the more layers, the better.
So long as you have a choice at which layers are active, I agree. If someone was to get access to my phone unlocked today they wouldn’t be able to move more than I’m willing to lose out of my account with the additional security controls in place. It’s a trade off. I don’t want any more friction forced down my throat.
That choice went away with mandate on banks around authorised push payment fraud.
If it came with a caveat that you will not be eligible for any fraud refund while the secondary prevention tool is deactivated, would you accept those terms?
This includes card and APP fraud, and stolen device.
Yes, I would.
A cop check is already required when adding a new payee etc. this is just another unnecessary invasion / friction.
You’re seriously trolling at this point
Definitely not trolling
I have to say, whilst I don’t necessarily think there’s a solution it does feel very unnecessary to literally do two identical unlocks back to back when e.g. approving a payment. It’s frustrating for me on an older pixel phone where the fingerprint sensor is dodgy and only works intermittently, let alone if you have access needs as someone above pointed out, which could actually compromise security by forcing you to repeat your pin in public.
Perhaps the app could make one unlock last for 5 seconds if you don’t leave the app or something? But as I said above I’ve no idea if that’s actually technically feasible without compromising security. Personally I’d also prefer that they allow us to turn off the requirement for an unlock just to open the app, but working off the assumption that there’s a reason they’ve done it such as regulation.
While I understand why it would be good to have the added security for opening the app turned on by default, it would be really great to have the option to disable it.
Personally, I find it annoying security theatre since verification is required to send money anyway.
I have a theory that the rise of right wing populism is in part due to the constant nagging from phones, cars, websites, shops, etc. for minor security and safety issues which lead to people feeling got at and untrusted and antagonized by ‘the man’. So the mindset generally is screw you wherever someone comes up with anything that’s actually important.
That said, the time it takes for me to open the Monzo app with my fingerprint is microseconds, so I can cope with it.
I’d be curious here on whether this is more of an issue on Android vs iOS?
On an iPhone as much as I dislike the forced FaceID, it’s barely noticeable with the exception of the padlock animation.
I do actually wonder whether having that animation whilst the OS also has its own FaceID animation meets Apple’s guidelines?
Anyway, over on devices where you have to use a fingerprint sensor, I’d definitely find this a lot more annoying since you physically have to take an additional action to open the app.
I’m Android. Takes a milisecond and my finger would be on the screen anyway to select where I want to go.
I know 3 people without fingerprints, entering their pin over and over must be really infuriating!
Perhaps they could use FaceID instead or one of their toes
FaceID doesn’t work on Android…I’ll tell them to whip out a toe
